But that\u2019s just how long it has been since\u00a0<strong>The Human Project<\/strong> unleashed their debut album \u2018<em>Origins<\/em>\u2019. A breathless mix of fast technical punk laced with melody. So, what took them so long to create follow-up \u2018<em>A Clarion Call<\/em>\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>Opener, \u2018<em>Desperate Times\u2019<\/em>, provides a false sense of security with a minute of ambience, a further minute of gentle singing,\u00a0 and then a noodly guitar lick before rounding out the three-minute song with a furious battering of drums and guitars.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, that&#8217;s what they&#8217;ve been doing,\u00a0<em>crafting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, <strong>The Human Project<\/strong> excel at speedy punk, but it\u2019s the way they deploy those galloping drums and shredding guitars that works so well. Used sparingly, throughout this remarkably solid record. It\u2019s fast, it\u2019s fun but carefully thought out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Human Project - That One Percent\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QYpZpvq6Ck0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>All three members, Jonny Smith (guitar), Luke Yates (guitar) and Joe Dimuantes (bass\/drums), share vocal duty, something that they pull it off brilliantly. Never disjointed, they compliment whoever is leading with harmonies, yells and screams. Similarly, the guitar work is technical, but never takes the focus away from the songs themselves. Each is different, but part of a whole. Only <em>\u2018Desperate Measures\u2019<\/em> features an outro, but when it\u2019s that big, why do another?<\/p>\n<p>Lyrically, the album has political overtones. Notably, lead single \u2018<em>That One Percent\u2019<\/em> \u00a0spits bile directly at the Tory Government and then becomes a tirade of yells. It\u2019s the most aggressive song here. Yet, it\u2019s followed by \u2018<em>The Rhetoric\u2019<\/em>\u00a0 which contains the most accessible vocal hooks, calling and responding to the question \u2018<em>Who pulls the strings<\/em>?\u2019 Six songs in interlude \u2018<em>Carrion\u2019<\/em> breaks things up, sounding like a sing-song in a canning factory. \u2018<em>What We Always Do\u2019<\/em>, perhaps the most ambitious song on offer, showing off what the band can really do, before \u2018<em>Blame<\/em>\u2019 adds an almost pop-punk feel to its presentation.
