\"\"<\/a>Watch Youth Man\u2019s<\/b> \u2018Live At the Lounge\u2019<\/i> session<\/a> and you\u2019ll see a band putting every ounce of energy they have into their performance. The result is eight minutes of blood-rushing adrenaline, bringing back memories of old At the Drive-In gigs, where the outside world was shut off and you were placed in a chasm of volatile urgency.<\/p>\n

The issue is, that same urgency made itself present on At The Drive-In\u2019s albums as well as shows (minus \u2018in-ter a-li-a\u2019<\/em>). While Youth Man\u2019s<\/b> previous works \u2018Bad Weather\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Wax\u2019<\/i> provide a barnstorming blend of muscle and mania, third EP \u2018Five Songs\u2019<\/i> feels lacking in that same gut-punch intensity that ignites its predecessors.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t to call \u2018Five Songs\u2019<\/i> a dud by any means. Its slick crafted garage hardcore is performed with irresistible levels of swagger on \u2018Valley Girl\u2019<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018I Don\u2019t Know\u2019<\/i>, where Kaila Whyte and Marcus Perk\u2019s vocal interplay accentuates the twisted romance of each song. One cannot help but be gripped by the noir-tinted sorrow, as Whyte\u2019s frantic yells of \u2018I don\u2019t know how to love\u2019<\/i> are backed by Perk\u2019s crooning harmonies.<\/p>\n

The pair often switch both singing and screaming duties across each song, which often builds tension on \u2018Constantly\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Statuesque\u2019.<\/i> Perhaps since becoming a duo, the songwriting motivation has shifted to accentuate vocal performance over instrumental.<\/p>\n

In that sense, \u2018Five Songs\u2019<\/i> demonstrates this focus on frantic poetry perfectly, and there\u2019s no doubt that in a live setting, they\u2019ll rack up the same energy of the tracks from \u2018Bad Weather\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Wax\u2019<\/i>. But there\u2019s also been a toning down on the ferocity of musicianship from Youth Man<\/b>, and one can only hope it returns on a full-length album.<\/p>\n
