Sure, there\u2019s still a handful of bands taking strides to push the genre forward, but between the lack of huge new names and a reluctance to try anything new in the slightest, it\u2019s not hard to notice the stagnation.<\/p>\n<p>And when it\u2019s bands like <b>Between You &amp; Me<\/b> looking to pick up the mantle, it becomes even more exasperating. While this Aussie mob clearly have the potential for some solid hook-writing, <i>\u2019Everything Is Temporary\u2019<\/i> couldn\u2019t be spinning its wheels more, once again trying to recycle every pop-punk trope for the umpteenth time and coming up short. That\u2019s not to say this album is totally irredeemable. The likes of <i>\u2019Move On\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2019Friends From \u201896\u2019<\/i> have the sunny, propulsive melodies you\u2019d hope for in pop-punk, but with the genre\u2019s oft-derivative instrumentation and Jake Wilson\u2019s incredibly pronounced, Americanised accent, this could be from literally any other band in the genre.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Between You &amp; Me - Friends From &#039;96 (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MK74QTn_C1A?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s probably the most frustrating thing here &#8211; <b>Between You &amp; Me<\/b> play so closely to pop-punk\u2019s obsession with well-trodden nostalgia that they seemingly forget to craft an identity of their own. Thus, <i>\u2019Dakota\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2019Catch A Break\u2019<\/i> both fill the interchangeable middle ground between mid-period Neck Deep and The Story So Far, while <i>\u2019Floral Glass\u2019<\/i> fills the role of the soaring alt-rock ballad that\u2019s become all the more commonplace. Again, this is a band who clearly know what they\u2019re doing as far as technical construction goes, but there\u2019s nothing here that can\u2019t be achieved from hundreds of other bands in the same mould.<\/p>\n<p>And at the end of the day, <b>Between You &amp; Me<\/b> are hardly going to progress if they don\u2019t find an identity of their own. As an ostensibly new band, <i>\u2019Everything Is Temporary\u2019<\/i> can be given the benefit of the doubt to an extent, but that doesn\u2019t stop it from having so little to offer, or failing to build its creators up as a new, sizable pop-punk presence.
