Tomorrow, Norwich five-piece Lightscape<\/b> look to make an impression with their new EP – ‘Circles’<\/i>. Its six songs of slick, anthemic rock that takes its cue from Thirty Seconds To Mars and a wealth of “BritRock” bands to do the rounds in recent years. Songs such as ‘By Design’<\/i>, More to Life’<\/i> and ‘Press Rewind’<\/i> are dominated by monstrous instrumentation and Will Overton’s soaring vocal prowess. While ‘Circles’<\/i> and ‘Haven’t Got The Time’<\/i> showcase their use of electronic flourishes. Overall, the EP is threaded together through a theme of unity and coming together through troubled times.<\/p>\n

As they prepare for the imminent release of ‘Circles’<\/i>, we spoke to Lightscape<\/b> to find out what albums have inspired each member of the band.<\/p>\n

Enter Shikari – The Mindsweep<\/h2>\n

Sam Nichol (guitar): This album for me sums up everything I love about music, It takes you on a journey, The lyrical content is bold and stands for something. Musically there are brutal heavy moments with huge riffs (‘The Appeal & the Mindsweep I’<\/i>) and there are also some of the most pretty and heartfelt moments (‘Dear Future Historians…’<\/i>).<\/p>\n

All of the above gives me the inspiration and confidence that I can write whatever I want to write and not be held to any “genre rule”. The world needs more brave musicians and less, safe, manufactured pop.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Bon Jovi – Keep The Faith<\/h2>\n

Ben Ashcroft (guitar): Growing up, I was subject to a lot of rock music. This band always stood out to me. They\u2019re up there with the best songwriters of their generation. ‘Keep The Faith’<\/i> has everything. You have the \u201cpop\u201d track with ‘Keep The Faith’, the power ballad with ‘Bed Of Roses’<\/i>. The epic ‘Dry County’<\/i> and then just to top it off, ‘In These Arms’<\/i> is songwriting perfection.<\/p>\n

It proved to me that you don\u2019t have to have an album that consists of the same style! You can mix it up! That\u2019s a very important part of Lightscape. There is no right or wrong. There are no rules. Be who you want to be!<\/p>\n

Coheed and Cambria – Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness<\/h2>\n

Christy Bullen (bass): This album, for me, combines prog with hard rock, with some beautiful melodies within their songs. The first time I heard ‘Welcome Home<\/i> really opened up my eyes to some guitar-driven music but with very high vocals, not just the usual gruff growls!<\/p>\n

Jimmy Eat World – Futures<\/h2>\n

Will Overton (vocals): This is pretty much the only album that I can go back to, over and over again and never get tired of. For me, it has everything, such diversity in feel between the tracks; great melodies, originality, the lot. I still think it sounds fresh today and it’s 13 years old!<\/p>\n

Angels & Airwaves – I-Empire<\/h2>\n

Jimmy Nichol (drums): This album for me has always been the basis of what I like in music; great melodies and massive atmospheric sounds. Even though it\u2019s not something I listen to much anymore it still blows me away. Atom Willard\u2019s drums on that album have always been a huge influence and it taught me to keep things basic and to let other elements speak to the listener.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

‘Circles’<\/i> EP by Lightscape<\/b> is released on December 1st.<\/p>\n
