With its straightforward and thorough execution, the Canadian trio delivered an enthralling set of raw rock \u2018n\u2019 roll songs. In the eighteen months since its release, they&#8217;ve toured rigorously, sharing stages with The Who and Against Me!<\/p>\n<p>As they their return with<em> &#8216;Master Volume&#8217;,<\/em> the Hamilton-based band aim to step out of the basement and on to bigger stages, delivering an abundance of bold, fuzz-laden rock songs. However, don&#8217;t think they&#8217;ve gone down the &#8220;made-for-radio&#8221; route as <em>&#8216;Master Volume&#8217;<\/em> is a strutting, steamroller of a record.<\/p>\n<p>Bookended by a wall of distorted feedback, straight away <em>&#8216;That&#8217;s What Heaven Feels Like&#8217;<\/em> sets the marker with Luke Bentham\u2019s yells of <em>&#8220;rolling through the windscreen&#8221;<\/em> and blazing guitar solo.<em> &#8216;Bathed In Light&#8217;<\/em> and <em>\u2018Pain Of Infinity\u2019<\/em> are early highlights that are soaked in swagger and irresistibly catchy hooks. Whereas \u2019<em>Please, Please Me\u2019<\/em> is a punk-fuelled romp before they slow things down with <em>\u2018Auf Wiedersehen\u2019.<\/em> A reflective, twisting number that sees Bentham\u2019s aim his angst to a former friend and he howls <em>\u201cI mean this in a nice way: Fuck You.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"The Dirty Nil - Bathed In Light\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IoazBvayjyQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even though <em>\u2018Master Volume\u2019<\/em> is a tour-de-force of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, a deathly cloud shadows over it. Throughout Bentham\u2019s words take a dark turn; fantasising about car crashes (<em>&#8216;Bathed In Light\u2019<\/em>), directly addressing former friends to frankly get their shit together (<em>\u2018I Don&#8217;t Want That Phone Call\u2019<\/em>) and staying at cheap motels (<em>\u2019Super 8&#8242;<\/em>). Although Bentham\u2019s occasionally plays up the rock star persona, the rhythmic duo of drummer Kyle Fisher and bassist Ross Miller ideally keep it all tied down.
