Harry Potter is a wizard, all he has to do is twiddle his fingers and <em>magic<\/em>. Poor Hermione has to work hard, even to pull a dove out of a hat. Similarly, Reading five-piece <strong>Calm For The Restless <\/strong>don\u2019t yet have the X-Factor, but with<em> \u2018Finish What You\u2019ve Started\u2019<\/em> they\u2019ve worked hard to produce a solid debut album.<\/p>\n<p>Picking up where their previous two EPs left off, the album continues their unique mix of mid-tempo alt-rock songs. \u00a0You\u2019ve heard Biffy Clyro, right? Guitarists Tom Holbrook and Martin Bradford certainly have, and if you\u2019re seeking those twangy, biting riffs then look no further than \u2018<em>Chase a Life\u2019<\/em> And, while we\u2019re on the subject, can we give <strong>Calm For The Restless <\/strong>an award for their guitar sound? It\u2019s absolutely perfect for the riffs they\u2019re playing. A single-coil crunch, beefed up when it needs to be, like the near-breakdown parts of single \u2018<em>I\u2019m a Lion<\/em>\u2019. Likewise, the rhythm section of Mark Randall and Mike Westwood sounds powerful, especially when the guitars drop out of \u2018<em>Moving On<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Calm for the Restless - I&#039;m a Lion [Official Music Video]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qBNi2ne6CF4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Singer Leon Macauley doesn\u2019t have the most powerful voice. \u00a0Sounding like a mix of Damon Albarn and Bloc Party\u2019s Kele Okereke, he\u2019s best on the slower \u2018<em>Brothers<\/em>\u2019 but doesn\u2019t always have the punch the songs need. Yet, his delivery is honest, and on \u2018<em>Crossfire<\/em>\u2019 you can hear him straining to reach the notes, which gives the song unexpected intimacy. Still, Macauley has an excellent ear for melody, just listen to how he slots himself around the guitars on \u2018<em>Rogues<\/em>\u2019, providing a solid, if not rousing, choruses.
