While the addition of full-timers Dave Depper and Zac Rae emphasises this notion.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface,<em> &#8216;Thank You For Today\u2019<\/em> has a pleasant sense of familiarity with its comfortable instrumentation and earnest songwriting. However, the departure of Walla is a big task to follow, yet its allowed <strong>Death Cab<\/strong> to take an\u00a0unrestrained approach, giving their sound freshness albeit with mixed results.\u00a0For example, the combination of pristine production and twinkling keyboards on opener<em> &#8216;I Dreamt We Spoke Again&#8217;<\/em> means Gibbard\u2019s fragile vocals get lost. In contrast,<em> &#8216;Summer Years&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0and <em>&#8216;Northern Lights&#8217;<\/em> are carried with constant <strong>Death Cab<\/strong> traits; plucky guitars, occasional distortion and poignant lyricism are complimented by momentarily synth swells.<\/p>\n<p>The midpoint pairing of<em> &#8216;Your Hurricane&#8217;<\/em> and <em>&#8216;When We Drive&#8217;<\/em> highlights the reflective imagery Gibbard uses throughout the record. The latter is a rose-tinted, nostalgic trip of easier, carefree times. Whereas\u00a0leadoff single, <em>&#8216;Gold Rush&#8217;<\/em> sees him pleading for his home of Seattle\u00a0to <em>&#8220;please don&#8217;t change&#8221;<\/em>. Musically, it plays to <strong>Death Cab<\/strong>&#8216;s strengths; breezy guitars and soft harmonies. Later on, <em>&#8216;You Moved Away&#8217;<\/em> swells with emotion as Gibbard effectively captures the feeling of a close friend moving away.<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"Death Cab for Cutie - &quot;Gold Rush&quot; (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XTPZWG5eLf8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As a whole, <em>&#8216;Thank You\u2026&#8217;<\/em> borders on &#8220;playing it safe&#8221; with few stylistic risks taken (<em>&#8216;Gold Rush&#8217;<\/em> is an exception). At times, it moulds into one, only for the sombre piano of <em>&#8217;60 &amp; Punk&#8217;<\/em> to get your attention. With waltzing lines such as\u00a0<em>&#8220;the curtain falls to applause, and the band plays you off&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;daydreaming of the upcoming tour&#8221;,<\/em>\u00a0Gibbard&#8217;s tale of refusing to grow up is one of the album&#8217;s compelling highlights.<\/p>\n<p>Although this is a new start, <strong>Death Cab<\/strong> haven&#8217;t\u00a0quite shed their old skin.
