\nIncestuous acts often dominate small punk scenes (in this case of Chatoonga\/Asheville) for quartet Basement Benders<\/b> (comprising members of This Bike Is A Pipebomb, Future Virgins, Hidden Sports and Black Rainbow) who have put their collective brain-power together on debut \u2019Lydiad\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u2019Lydiad\u2019<\/i> is compact with a calibre of the gruff punk you\u2019d expect from a No Idea Records act, determined to ensure your vocal chords will be inflamed after the \u201coi!\u201d<\/i> charge of \u2018Up North\u2019<\/i> and snatching riffs that yanks onto listeners as bassist\/vocalist Terry Johnson declares, \u201cCome tomorrow, I\u2019ll win you over,\u201d<\/i> on the unrelenting \u2019Purple Days\u2019<\/i>. A power-pop underbelly sound also rises to the surface at times where the band embellish the quirky jangly moments, especially on the waning drizzle of \u2018Owen Hart\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Standout tracks are \u2018Lydia\u2019<\/i> and \u2019Salt On The Roads\u2019<\/i> where an immediate org-core exuberance that swallows the whole record. The latter churns on the sombre side of nostalgia as Johnson is resentful saying, \u201cI wish I hadn\u2019t been so young and so wrong.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Supergroups are packed aplenty within the crevices of the punk scene, often as a result of short lived acts \u2013 the get-up-and-do-it mentality, something that Basement Benders<\/b> have done to punk excellency.<\/p>\n
