{"id":69326,"date":"2018-09-12T15:00:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=69326"},"modified":"2018-09-09T21:04:22","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T20:04:22","slug":"review-arcane-roots-landslide-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-arcane-roots-landslide-ep\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Arcane Roots &#8211; Landslide EP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/landslide-cover.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69327 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/landslide-cover-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\"><\/a>On the 31<sup>st<\/sup> of August, <strong>Arcane Roots<\/strong> left a message to their fans, saying that the \u2018<em>Landslide<\/em>\u2019 would be the last release from &#8220;this chapter&#8221; of the band, implying an indefinite hiatus, if not the end. This EP comprises two alternate takes,\u00a0 a reinvention and new song taken from the sessions for their final album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-arcane-roots-melancholia-hymns\/\">\u2018Melancholia Hymns\u2019<\/a>.<\/em> Well received, by all accounts, it wasn\u2019t the easiest of albums to make. A departure from the band\u2019s earlier sound, it\u2019s a record made up of protracted electronic-based songs, forgoing much of their crazy guitar work. Never ones to shy from the grandiose, the album channelled those sensibilities to build vast soundscapes. \u2018<em>Landslides<\/em>\u2019 shares that vision yet fails to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>With alternative takes, you have the right to be sceptical, presumably the best take ended up on the album, right? \u00a0That\u2019s certainly true for opener <em>\u2018Before Me (Over)\u2019.<\/em> Much like the album version, it serves as an introduction and is pretty nebulous, never properly making a statement in its own right.\u00a0 Similarly, <em>\u2018Matter (Revel)\u2019<\/em> feels incomplete. Ghostly vocals haunt a broken metronome sound, fading and lingering around until the payoff, which is a weird farty bassline. Underwhelming isn\u2019t the word. It\u2019d be comical if you hadn\u2019t wasted five minutes of your life listening to it. Neither song has teeth, at best they\u2019re atmospheric swirls, hence the epic \u2018<em>Landslide<\/em>\u2019 stands out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Arcane Roots - Landslide (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kdOVCVDC5Ag?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Left unfinished during the initial sessions, it shares a template with the album\u2019s best cuts. The moody opening thankfully spreads into chunky guitars and Andrew Groves\u2019 signature wail; it\u2019s everything the band excel at. Shorn of the original\u2019s focus, guitars and vocal hooks, \u2018<em>Off the Floor (Fade)\u2019<\/em> works surprisingly well.
