As a response to their gained notoriety, frontman Joe Talbot recognises the responsibility to promote compassion and unity in a world where racism and hate-speech seems to guarantee you a platform on a major news network. It\u2019s little wonder why an album like <i>\u2018Joy As an Act of Resistance\u2019<\/i> provides a voice to people wondering where the humanity in our society has disappeared to.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018I\u2019m like Fred Astaire, I dance like I don\u2019t care\u2019<\/i>, Talbot gleefully yells on the opener <i>\u2018Colossus\u2019<\/i>. Sure enough, he dances with delight, mocking his detractors throughout this record. <i>\u2018Never Fight a Man With a Perm\u2019<\/i> mocks self-imposed hard men they shared nightlife in Bristol with, while <i>\u2018Samaritans\u2019<\/i> reads like a tired list of commands he\u2019s heard from elders to stop him from crying in public (<i>\u2018Man up, sit down, chin up, pipe down, socks up, don\u2019t cry, drink up, just lie\u2019<\/i>).<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"IDLES - COLOSSUS (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VODKZxsRa_E?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The festivities take an abrupt halt\u00a0during the cathartic <i>\u2018June\u2019<\/i>, a song written about Talbot\u2019s stillborn daughter Agatha. Time stands still and all carnage is suspended while he considers the hopes and dreams he had about being a father. A brave expression of sorrow and disappointment from Talbot, <i>\u2018June\u2019<\/i> is a reminder we\u2019re allowed to act fragile and that we must support those who are.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Joy As an Act of Resistance\u2019<\/i> is a record that holds out one hand to those who are vulnerable, (<i>\u2018Danny Nedelko\u2019<\/i>, <i>\u2018Television\u2019<\/i>) and raises a middle finger with the other hand to the abusers (<i>\u2018Great\u2019<\/i>, <i>\u2018I\u2019m Scum\u2019<\/i>) while also fitting in some absurd humour for good measure (<i>\u2018Gram Rock\u2019<\/i>). If <b>Idles<\/b> are leading a new wave of bands, they\u2019re leading with an album that&#8217;s thought-provoking, encourages change and attacks ignorance, greed and apathy.
