From\u00a0being judges on a reality TV show to marrying celebrities to releasing a separate\u00a0side-project. Nevertheless,\u00a0since returning from hiatus in 2016 with\u00a0\u2018<em>Youth Authority<\/em>\u2019<em>,\u00a0<\/em><strong>Good Charlotte<\/strong> have\u00a0had their work cut out to stay relevant up against younger bands who tread similar sonic ground, such as Waterparks.\u00a0To this end, new album \u2018<em>Generation Rx<\/em>\u2019 tackles a topic everyone can relate to &#8211; death.<\/p>\n<p>From the off, it\u2019s a genuine surprise to hear the band so surefooted. Just listen to \u2018<em>Shadowboxer<\/em>\u2019 with its one-two punch of a chorus or the simple effectiveness of \u2018<em>Prayers<\/em>\u2019. Gone are the honking keyboards and suspicious rap experiments.<\/p>\n<p>With only nine songs, there\u2019s no space for filler. Don\u2019t think this is a total reinvention, this is a <strong>Good Charlotte <\/strong>record, warts and all. You\u2019re not getting any deep philosophical musings, but the darker focus reaps rewards. Similarly, Benji Madden and Zakk Cervini co-produce in a winning combination. As you\u2019d expect, during the verses guitars and drums drop in and out with layers of synths providing a canvas, but it\u2019s done skillfully.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Good Charlotte - Shadowboxer [Official Video]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eJZ9cHzzxOA?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sure there&#8217;s all sorts of electronic trickery is going on, but they don\u2019t forget their birthplace &#8211; punk. Hence, the instruments have a real heft (particularly on \u2018<em>Self Help<\/em>\u2019) and even the slower \u2018<em>Cold Song<\/em>\u2019 avoids sounding flaccid. Throughout Joel Madden is genuine and heartfelt, to the point that Architects&#8217; Sam Carter\u2019s guest vocal on \u2018<em>Leech\u2019<\/em> doesn\u2019t really add anything extra. And yes, the lyrics on \u2018<em>Actual Pain<\/em>\u2019 are a bit cringy, but the delivery sells them. Only \u2018<em>California<\/em>\u2019 breaks the mould, closing the record on a brighter note.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good Charlotte<\/strong> bite with \u2018<em>Generation Rx<\/em>\u2019.
