Vocalist Drew Thompson and producer\/percussionist Ian Romano helmed the project, trading demos while on the road touring their previous record \u2018<em>Our Pleasure<\/em>\u2019. The intention, to capture the band\u2019s live sound \u2013 Hint; they succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the music is a frantic stampede of hardcore riffs and tempo shifts with 14 songs spread over 32 minutes. After the relatively gentle bounce of opener \u2018<em>Marathon\u2019<\/em>, all bets are off. Snarling riffs batter you from all angles, resulting in some finely-tuned chaos. However, your enjoyment of the record hinges on Drew Thompson\u2019s unique, sneery voice. Leaning heavily on a marmite piercing yell, he toes the line between effective and irritating.<\/p>\n<p>By the time you reach \u2018<em>Dog Park<\/em>\u2019, where he breaks from screeching to drawl about \u2018macchiatos\u2019, you either get it or hate him. Compare with the musically similar United Nations, and the vocals sit high in the mix, dominating the sound. Ironically, on the mid-section of \u2018<em>Engine<\/em>\u2019<em>,<\/em> he\u2019s buried deeper, an effect like stirring glass into your porridge. You can\u2019t deny Thompson\u2019s brilliance trading yells on \u2018<em>Across the Couch\u2019<\/em> but it feels like you\u2019re being tested on the angular back-to-back stabbing of \u2018<em>Switch Off<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Catch &amp; Release\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Single Mothers - Dog Parks x Switch Off (Official Videos)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8LbDvgvUCfI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sitting at the record\u2019s midpoint \u2018<em>Stoic_Pointless\u2019<\/em> is a watershed. Sharing the tone of\u00a0\u2018<em>Our Pleasure<\/em>\u2019,\u00a0it\u2019s laid back, swaggery and features guitar breaks, allowing Thompson to broaden his range (Imagine Aaron Weiss\u2019 voice on mewithoutYou&#8217;s older material). Subsequent songs \u2018<em>Tan Line<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Big Scar<\/em>\u2019 share this varying pace, benefiting from a wider canvas and post-hardcore feel. Yet, they can\u2019t resist one more ear-chewing blast of hardcore on \u2018<em>Signs<\/em>\u2019.
