“We want our music to be for everyone, but people who are that close-minded, they\u2019re not gonna get it anyway, so we don\u2019t really care.”<\/em><\/h2>\n

Tampa post-hardcore rockers Underoath<\/strong> recently made a triumphant comeback to recording with the release of \u2018Erase Me\u2019<\/em>. Their first album in eight years has been followed by a wealth of tours and festival appearances, including Reading & Leeds<\/strong> where we caught up with drummer and vocalist Aaron Gillespie and lead singer Spencer Chamberlain for a chat. Incredibly, for a band who\u2019s been around for so long, this year marked their first ever Reading appearance, a fact they were both pretty excited over. \u201cWe\u2019ve been to the UK so many times and we\u2019ve never done Reading or Leeds\u2026[and now] we\u2019re closing down a stage, so it\u2019s really flattering,\u201d<\/em> Spencer told us, the two of them sat outside the press area on a bench and shivering as the late afternoon weather began to turn cold, but in high spirits regardless.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a crazily busy time for the band recently, with them doing a run of other festivals out in Europe this summer, including Download Madrid and Paris, and \u201cfifteen others\u201d<\/em>. Aaron remarked with a laugh, \u201cI think both of our girlfriends have almost left us, like, \u2018what the fuck is this\u2019\u2026but it\u2019s better to be too busy than not busy at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This non-stop schedule comes on the heels of aforementioned album \u2018Erase Me\u2019<\/em>, an album they were keen to talk about and are clearly very proud of. It\u2019s also an album that has sparked some controversy since musically, it\u2019s a departure from their other records, and personally, the band have voiced their move away from Christianity. Underoath<\/strong> have revamped themselves, but as Spencer pointed out, \u201cwe had to break up the band to do that. Everything\u2019s gotta be different for us to continue and be happy we have to do it on our own terms. We can\u2019t stay connected to something we did in 2006 and say ‘this is how we\u2019re gonna do our business, this is how we\u2019re gonna do our band.’ We love those songs and we love that time and we\u2019ll always play that stuff, but you can\u2019t live like you did then. Imagine who you were ten years ago!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t go to an art gallery and want to see the same painting painted fifteen times,\u201d<\/em> Aaron added, coming up with his own analogy. \u201cThen you\u2019d never go back. So, if you kind of address each album as a piece of art or a painting, you\u2019re still the same artist so it\u2019s going to have the same style to a certain degree but you\u2019re gonna try and paint something different every time you do it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
