Although it marked growth in their songwriting, it stylistically lacked in progression. So after a much-needed break, their fourth full-length, <em>&#8216;Proper Dose&#8217;<\/em>, marks a new start for the Walnut Creek quintet. Although don\u2019t be fooled to think this a stark departure. There\u2019s still a nous for memorable melodies and an underpinned pop-punk charge (see <em>\u2018Out Of It\u2019<\/em>), yet there\u2019s a willingness to expand their sound pallet.<\/p>\n<p>With names such as The Beatles and Oasis being cited as influences in the lead up to its release, it\u2019s clear <strong>TSSF<\/strong>\u2019s creative conscious has expanded. For example,<em> \u2018Take Me As You Please\u2019<\/em> is a melancholy-soaked, acoustic-led number with a breezy (and pleasing) delivery. Whereas<em> \u2018Upside Down\u2019<\/em> embraces sensible pop hooks with pleasing, mellow delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout, there are hints of musical growth; semi-interlude track<em> &#8216;Line&#8217;<\/em>, weaves in before <em>\u2019Growing On You\u2019<\/em> provides a late highlight. Sonically atmospheric, it\u2019s maintained by harmonious vocals and evocative drum work from Ryan Torf, firmly marking a willingness to evolve. Nevertheless, <em>&#8216;Proper Dose&#8217;<\/em> is a record that ebbs and flows stylistically.<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"The Story So Far &quot;Let it Go&quot;\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v2hrXCeXtrY?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Let It Go&#8217;<\/em> bridges the past with the present; Parker Cannon&#8217;s confrontational lyrics being countered with an explosive, vibrant, and playful chorus. Cannon\u2019s refined and rapid delivery makes a return on <em>\u2018If I Fall\u2019.<\/em> Likewise <em>\u2018Need To Know\u2019<\/em> begins with a sense of familiarity; a stomping, anthemic punk tempo that is pulled back during the harmonious chorus.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Light Years\u2019<\/em> ideally ties it up with subtle reverb guitars complimenting Cannon\u2019s distinctive voice. It&#8217;s a fitting conclusion to a record that takes subtle risks, yet doesn&#8217;t entirely abandon the core sound that has put <strong>TSSF<\/strong> in such a lofty position.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly,<em> &#8216;Proper Dose&#8217;<\/em> marks an upwards turn for a band with one foot out of the confines of pop-punk.
