\nWhat\u2019s this? A band featuring former Get Up Kids and Gratitude chap Thomas Becker and signed to Epitaph? Be still my beating heart, for this is surely too good to be true. <\/p>\n

Alas, \u2018Battles\u2019<\/i> doesn\u2019t quite match the expectation for someone who grew up on a diet of Midwest emo and endless Jonah Matranga projects, but Beautiful Bodies<\/b> have still delivered an enjoyable slice of punk-lite alt-pop. <\/p>\n

First off, it\u2019s worth noting that \u2018Battles\u2019<\/i> sounds fabulous, featuring a pristine production job that is far beyond the confines of punk rock. Secondly, the vocals of Alicia Solombrino are frequently outstanding, as she\u2019s got such an expressive turn of phrase \u2013 and unique phraseology \u2013 it makes songs such as \u2018She\u2019s A Blast\u2019<\/i> frequently interesting and engaging. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Lyrically however, \u2018Battles\u2019<\/i> is merely so-so, despite the politicised nature of songs such as \u20181973\u2019<\/i> (no doubt in part influenced by Becker\u2019s alternative career as a prominent human rights lawyer) and there\u2019s a fair few clich\u00e9s and obvious, yet ultimately meaningless, rhymes that might make you wince. <\/p>\n

However, these are faults that can be overlooked as, in delivering some catchy, undemanding pop-rock, Beautiful Bodies<\/b> have created a crazy sugar-rush high. Each song has the ability to effortlessly fill a dancefloor, and it\u2019s in this crossover where you get the feeling Beautiful Bodies<\/b> may make their name. Take, for example \u2018Subversive Lover\u2019<\/i> as exhibit A. If you\u2019re not singing and bouncing along the moment the chorus hits, then you may as well pop your slippers on grandad. Unchallenging it may be, but it\u2019s also a huge amount of fun. And ultimately, isn\u2019t that what music\u2019s all about? <\/p>\n
