The pomp that defines the band\u2019s work is here, but this isn\u2019t business as usual.\u00a0Unexpected? Oh, yes. Gone is the big band sound of\u00a02013\u2019s &#8216;<em>Everything is Debatable&#8217;<\/em>. Instead, it&#8217;s the sexual groove of a funk odyssey.<\/p>\n<p>As \u2018<em>S\u2019Only Natural<\/em>\u2019 illustrates, with its stomping sound, they\u2019ve nailed the funk aesthetic. Big basslines and drum beats pulse through the record\u2019s first half. \u2018<em>Cheap Love<\/em>\u2019 impresses with a sultry vocal, accentuated by a bippy-boppy keyboard. \u2018<em>Let It Burn<\/em>\u2019 teases with strings and a pause in <em>just<\/em> the right place; designed for a 1970\u2019s dancefloor, you can\u2019t help but shake your hips. Even when \u2018<em>Close<\/em>\u2019 slows things down, it keeps the spirit with throbbing beats, a big organ and Kline\u2019s low husky voice.<\/p>\n<p>Midway, everything goes a bit awry. Ballad \u2018<em>Anytime Anyform<\/em>\u2019 signals a sharp transition into more experimental territory. Such uncomfortable keyboards and beats might work for Radiohead, but not with these pop stylings. On \u2018<em>Put In Out<\/em>\u2019 1980&#8217;s synth-pop rears its head. Tonally at odds, with straight drums and synthesizers, it feels strangely muted. Having just shaken off the record\u2019s identity, \u2018<em>Hang Loose<\/em>\u2019 returns us to the 1970\u2019s disco but its weak falsetto vocal is dull and uninspired. \u2018<em>I\u2019ll Keep Following You<\/em>\u2019 is funky but forgettable.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Hellogoodbye - S&#039;Only Natural | Official Video\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MG7OOgg5yOk?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we get a tacked-on grandiose duo. \u2018<em>Stare into the Black<\/em>\u2019 is a three-year-old experiment in lounge jazz, which belongs on an elevator soundtrack, not here. Finally, brass and strings give \u2018<em>Honeymoon Forever\u2019<\/em> a floaty 1950\u2019s feel. You could imagine movie teen heartthrob Vince Fontane crooning it in Grease. It\u2019s cheesy as hell, even embarrassing, yet explains the peculiar orchestral opener \u2018<em>Honeymoon Overture<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve got to admire <strong>Hellogoodbye<\/strong>\u2019s balls for trying something new, but once &#8216;<em>S\u2019Only Natural<\/em>\u2019 steps off the disco dancefloor, it very quickly stumbles.<\/p>\n<p>2.5\/5<\/p>\n<p><em>S\u2019Only Natural<\/em>\u2019 by\u00a0<strong>Hellogoodbye\u00a0<\/strong>is released on 5th October on <strong>Alcopop!
