Combining unsettling imagery with brutal musicianship is a terrifying mix \u2013 and one that Massachusetts\u2019 heavy-hitters <strong>Ice Nine Kills <\/strong>have executed impressively on their new record <em>\u2018The Silver Scream\u2019<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking a huge amount of inspiration from slasher films, haunted tales and the most common horror villains that are often seen out and about on Halloween, the group take an inventive, fun approach to conveying their horror stories through some terrific, if not disturbing songs. There&#8217;s the curse of Camp Crystal Lake (\u2018<em>Thank God It\u2019s Friday\u2019),<\/em>\u00a0Nightmare on Elm Street (\u2018<em>The American Nightmare\u2019), <\/em>and even a choppy, Jaw-inspired breakdown on \u2018<em>Rock The Boat\u2019 <\/em>that\u2019s as enjoyable as it sounds. They\u2019ve clearly invested a lot of thought in this project, having\u00a0released a couple of eight-minute, short films to compliment \u2018<em>A Grave Mistake\u2019 <\/em>and the aforementioned \u2018<em>Thank God It\u2019s Friday\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Ice Nine Kills - The American Nightmare (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JXq2TBAuL8o?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s to be expected that a record basing its existence on horror movies will carry with it a fair bit of cheesiness. Voice-clippings tucked in to almost every track, lyrics that on any other album would feel intensely cringeworthy, and even an impression of Pennywise the Clown on \u2018<em>IT Is The End\u2019. <\/em>Yet here, they\u2019re all forgivable, as they add to the immersive, dramatic nature of the album, and that\u2019s a mean feat to pull off on its own. Even the instrumentation beefs up the theatrics, with strings, synths and all sorts of well-thought-out riffs and pulled sound effects emulating the movies they owe their creation to.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>The Silver Scream\u2019 <\/em>has no right to be as fun as it is but boy it is fun.
