{"id":70232,"date":"2018-10-02T14:00:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T13:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=70232"},"modified":"2018-09-29T13:55:23","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T12:55:23","slug":"review-youth-killed-it-whats-so-great-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-youth-killed-it-whats-so-great-britain\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Youth Killed It &#8211; What&#8217;s So Great, Britain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-70233 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/535749-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/535749-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/535749-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/535749-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/535749.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Following on from their successful and outright enjoyable debut record \u2018<em>Modern Bollotics\u2019, <\/em>Norwich five-piece <strong>Youth Killed It <\/strong>have returned with their convivial sophomore effort \u2013 a record that captures the essence of a divided Britain with tongue-in-cheek wit, at times almost having a laugh about how much of a mess things are.<\/p>\n<p>Where their first record looked at more personal issues of being in a band trying to make a living, \u2018<em>What\u2019s So Great, Britain?\u2019 <\/em>puts society under the microscope instead, satirising modern British society, no better done so than the opening title track which comically points out \u201c<em>we only won the World Cup once \/ And now we\u2019re living like we\u2019re out in front\u201d. <\/em>Elsewhere, thuggish lad behaviour is called out on the supremely catchy, indie-anthem \u2018<em>Headbutt\u2019, <\/em>while single \u2018<em>Great British Summer\u2019 <\/em>taunts the nation\u2019s Seasonal Affective Disorder, poking fun at frontman Jack Murphy\u2019s miserable, moaning neighbour.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Youth Killed It - What&#039;s So Great, Britain? (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sq7u9LTaR9A?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Musically, it\u2019s hard not to like <strong>Youth Killed It<\/strong>\u2019s infectious indie-punk sound, as their light instrumentation harks of 90\u2019s indie-rock, tinged with punk elements of bands like The Clash. Frontman Murphy has a certain, real-talk swagger to his vocal delivery, that almost delves into rapping not too dissimilar to the likes of Rou Reynolds, or Jamie T \u2013 who gets a nice little name-drop on \u2018<em>This Sounds Clich\u00e9\u2019. <\/em>Their sound is both fun and dance-worthy, like on the cheeky \u2018<em>0121\u2019,\u00a0<\/em>carrying a chipper chorus that flippantly jokes \u201c<em>you can call 01 do one\u201d. <\/em>Yet it\u2019s not all taking the piss, with lyrics that point fingers and mock the ignorance of others\u2019 toxic actions. On \u2018<em>What You\u2019re Thinking<\/em>, it\u2019s clear the group aren\u2019t here to just make pretty sounds \u2013 they\u2019re trying to make people think.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>What\u2019s So Great, Britain?\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is a first-rate follow up to the band\u2019s debut, and one that showcases <strong>Youth Killed It <\/strong>as a band capable of writing neat hooks, while lyrics lampoon the complex country we live in.
