Despite distancing themselves from the metal, they can\u2019t avoid the drama. 2016\u2019s \u2018<em>Retrograde<\/em>\u2019 ushered in a sonic shift, along with grievous line-up changes and revelations about outside songwriters. The journey hasn\u2019t ended there, tonight, they\u2019ve been downgraded to Club Academy.<\/p>\n<p>First up, it\u2019s a band who\u2019ve literally had a long journey, Japanese metalcore band <strong>Coldrain<\/strong>. Bringing a wealth of experience to the stage, they play like there\u2019s something to prove. Energy crackles from the guitarists and sweat flies as drummer Katsuma Minatani batters his kit. Vocalist Masato Hayakawa sounds a little ropey, but he\u2019s trying hard and quickly whips up the audience.\u00a0 \u2018<em>Runaway<\/em> \u2018 and \u2018<em>Feed the fire<\/em>\u2019 are warmly received with big breakdowns getting heads banging. On slower song \u2018<em>The War is On<\/em>\u2019 the band are at their best, but it\u2019s with closer \u2018<em>Gone<\/em>\u2019 that everyone\u2019s having the most fun. (3.5\/5)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Volumes<\/strong> saunter on after their intro track has finished, indicating how their set is going to run, lazily.\u00a0 The crowd just aren\u2019t into the lurchy djent of opener \u2018<em>Left For Dead<\/em> \u2018. Technical glitches are sorted for the second song \u2018<em>91367<\/em>\u2019 but the band can\u2019t hold everyone\u2019s attention. Gus Farias\u2019 tired drawl fails to tempt any crowd surfers, most of the crowd have decamped to the bar. Co-vocalist Myke Terry has the required energy, but he\u2019s underused, spending most of the 30 minutes dancing in the corner. \u00a0\u2018<em>Waves Control<\/em>\u2019 whips the audience up, yet other songs fall hopelessly flat. It\u2019s a massively uneven set, at times like they\u2019re not even trying. During \u2018<em>Finite<\/em>\u2019, Farias proclaims <em>&#8220;Oh, I\u2019m so f**king high right now&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 frankly, it shows. the smaller venue feels packed. \u2018<em>Sk-68<\/em>\u2019 plays over the sound system and <strong>Crown the Empire <\/strong>appear in a storm of charisma. Quickly proving they belong on a much bigger stage, they launch into \u2018<em>Are You Coming With Me<\/em>?\u2019 with so much energy you could sell it bottled.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping the audience on their toes, the band plunge into a catalogue that mixes singalongs and breakdowns. Throughout, Andrew Velasquez\u2019s vocals sound stunning, but the chorus of \u2018<em>Memories of a Broken Heart<\/em>\u2019 arrives like a tidal wave.\u00a0 Similarly, tracks like \u2018<em>Voices<\/em>\u2019 and the insane \u2018<em>Johnny Ringo<\/em>\u2019 soar, despite the band being whittled to a four-piece. Mid-set two new singles get an airing. \u2018<em>20\/20<\/em>\u2019 with Hayden Trees dishing out a massive driving bass riff and \u2018<em>All I Am<\/em>\u2019, which basks in a glorious hook-filled delivery. Both are extremely well received.<\/p>\n<p>Orchestral interlude \u2018<em>Oh, Catastrophe<\/em>\u2019 is piped in, allowing the band to leave the stage and Velasquez to sing solo. It\u2019s overblown, it\u2019s theatrical, but it\u2019s fantastic and leads into closer \u2018<em>Fallout<\/em>\u2019. On record the song is marred by gimmicky production choices that sounded rubbish in 2010 and haven\u2019t aged well either, here, it plays out like a classic. Quickly, the band return for a triumphant encore of \u2018<em>Initiation<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Machines<\/em>\u2019 leaving a big impression on the doting crowd.
