\nOften it\u2019s easy for reviewers \u2013 or \u2018critics\u2019 if we\u2019re puffing out our chests and self-aggrandising \u2013 to forget that essentially we\u2019re only presenting our personal opinion.<\/p>\n

The problem with that is that opinions can change. And that is exactly where I\u2019ve found myself after a couple of weeks with Pentimento\u2019s<\/b> latest full-length, \u2018I, No Longer\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Now, for full disclosure \u2013 I\u2019m a huge Pentimento<\/b> fan. If you haven\u2019t checked out their self-titled debut or \u2018Inside The Sea\u2019<\/i>, you\u2019re missing out. Period. Yet my final review for \u2018I, Longer\u2019<\/i> looks far different to the words I scrawled down last week. <\/p>\n

I, No Longer by Pentimento<\/a><\/p>\n

Initially, I just felt it was all a bit too\u2026 boring. Pedestrian and one-paced, with an emphasis on mood and texture rather than heartfelt sing-alongs, it was like all of the things I loved about their previous output had been removed, replaced by an overwrought, overblown sense of grandeur.<\/p>\n

So, a fortnight down the line and I find myself playing \u2018I, No Longer\u2019<\/i> on a daily basis. Not out of obligation because it needs to be reviewed, but because I enjoy it (for enjoy, read love); it swings from being achingly beautiful and sincere to euphoric and bombastic, often within the same song.<\/p>\n

For example, \u2018My Solution Is In The Lake\u2019<\/i> harks back to the narrative approach of The Weakerthans\u2019 \u2018Exiles Among You\u2019 and is lyrically the finest song the group has written to date, rich with imagery and dripping with emotion. It\u2019s a similar story throughout, with \u2018Tell Me\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Stuck Forever\u2019<\/i> recalling the spine-tingling melancholy of Copeland, albeit with a rocking, punchy veneer.<\/p>\n

Fortunately there\u2019s still some old-school Pentimento<\/b> blasts buried within \u2018I, No Longer\u2019<\/i>, which begin to shine once you\u2019re embedded in the record. \u2018Sink Or Swim\u2019<\/i> is a real fist in the air anthem, while \u2018Slow But Sure\u2019<\/i> is merely a more refined take on their older sound, as is the powerful opener \u2018Small Talk For Strangers\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s something of a crude comparison, but if you imagine the feeling you got when you first listened to \u2018Deja Entendu\u2019<\/i> after blasting \u2018Your Favourite Weapon\u2019<\/i>, then that\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about. It\u2019s not an immediate “holy shit” reaction \u2013 in fact it\u2019s considerably more subtle, seeping in over multiple listens. But, for reference, in the course of doing this review, I gave \u2018Pentimento\u2019<\/i> a spin. It barely lasted 3 songs before I flipped back to \u2018I, No Longer\u2019<\/i>. I\u2019d have never thought that a week ago.<\/p>\n

Of course, they\u2019re both excellent albums, but while \u2018Pentimento\u2019<\/i> is a strong example of the genre, \u2018I, No Longer\u2019<\/i> is something altogether different. It\u2019s a big league album with title aspirations and boy, does it sound like it.<\/p>\n
