From their early inception following the break of hardcore punk outfit, The Bride, through three of their own albums, the band have become a staple of the Australian heavy music scene. Their last release, &#8216;<em>Opera Oblivia<\/em>&#8216;, could easily have been considered the band&#8217;s\u00a0<em>magnum opus<\/em>, a concept album touching on themes of ageing, self-doubt, and corruption. A near untouchable album within hardcore punk, if it were to be a movie, then\u00a0<em>&#8216;Rue&#8217;<\/em> would be its sequel.<\/p>\n<p>The movie analogy is not too farfetched, as the album is littered with theatrics, from the circus-themed interludes to almost fantasy-like melodies scattered throughout the album&#8217;s runtime. While some of Dre Faivre&#8217;s harsher vocal performances are left in the rear view mirror, the crunch of the instrumentals is not, with Matt Gravolin and Josh Campiano delivering some powerful riffs and imaginative progressions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Hellions - Smile [Official Music Video]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AamQQktMgBc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Rue&#8217;<\/em> builds on some of the concepts put forth on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Opera Oblivia&#8217;<\/em>, and is more of a dichotomy between self-worth and self-doubt.\u00a0<em>&#8216;X (Mwah)&#8217;<\/em> perfectly exemplifies this, with lines like\u00a0<em>&#8220;I&#8217;m in the twilight of my prime&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;If Freddie wrote his Rhapsody at 29\/Then maybe I still have time for mine&#8221;<\/em>. The song\u00a0<em>&#8216;Smile&#8217;<\/em> also clings on to hope, emphasising the importance of a positive mental attitude.\u00a0It&#8217;s moments like these that separate and propel\u00a0<em>&#8216;Rue&#8217;<\/em> away from\u00a0<em>&#8216;Opera Oblivia&#8217;<\/em>, an album that seemed much more negative in comparison to its successor&#8217;s sense of hope.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the more interesting moments here are the callbacks to\u00a0<em>&#8216;Opera Oblivia&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0<em>&#8216;The Lotus&#8217;<\/em> is a clear follow-up to\u00a0<em>&#8216;Lotus Eater&#8217;<\/em>, and there are some recycled riffs implemented as\u00a0<em>leitmotifs<\/em> to evoke a response from the listener.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Rue&#8217;<\/em> goes far beyond anything the band has put out previously.
