Glasgow instrumentalists <b>VASA<\/b> have thrown us one such curveball in the form of their debut album <i>\u2018Colours\u2019<\/i> and boy, is it a curveball we\u2019re happy we caught! When you see a band describe themselves as \u201cprogressive post-rock\u201d, you\u2019d be inclined to expect atmospherics, introspection and subtleties. Well, those are all in attendance but never have they sounded so utterly joyous in their delivery.<\/p>\n<p>From the opening barrage of <i>\u2018Smashletes\u2019<\/i> to the closing disco beats of <i>\u2018Poseidon\u2019s Kiss\u2019<\/i>, <i>\u2018Colours\u2019<\/i> is a grin-inducing, effervescent explosion of upbeat riffs, skittishly light-hearted percussion and wonderfully windswept electronica. In terms of attitude, just imagine Andrew WK having a crack at Cave-In\u2019s classic <i>\u2018Jupiter\u2019<\/i> album. See, how fun does that sound?<!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lead single <i>\u2018Fat Ronaldo\u2019<\/i> is the perfect example of how <b>Vasa<\/b> are able to invade your brain riff by riff, without the need for vocals, and stay firmly implanted there with the very best earworms \u2013 it\u2019s big, it\u2019s bold, it\u2019s vibrant and most of all it\u2019s overwhelmingly intense in the most positive way imaginable. They also have that glorious ability to sound authentically Caledonian without resorting to bagpipes and fife \u2013 their heritage seems to ooze effortlessly out of every note and <i>\u2018Colours\u2019<\/i> is all the more glorious for it.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2019Colours\u2019<\/i> is a simply terrific record and along with it, <b>VASA<\/b> should be marked down as one of 2015\u2019s greatest and most welcome surprises.
