This comes successfully in the form of <strong>Laura Jane Grace &amp; The Devouring Mothers<\/strong>. An Americana album straddling the edges of punk, country and rock, <em>\u2018Bought To Rot\u2019 <\/em>is an easy listen, with simple refrains <em>(\u201cOn top of the world at the end of the world with you\u201d \u2013 \u2018Apocalypse Now (&amp; later)\u2019) <\/em>and a relaxed sound.<\/p>\n<p>Opener <em>\u2018China Beach\u2019<\/em>, which sounds more like spoken word than lyrics for the most part, speaks to you like a casual conversation with a friend. Drawing you in, it paves the way for the following tracks including <em>\u2018The Airplane Song\u2019<\/em>, juxtaposing descriptive verses (<em>\u201cThere\u2019s an airplane with an empty seat [\u2026] You\u2019re not there drinking white wines complimentary\u201d<\/em>) with simple, to-the-point choruses.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Laura Jane Grace &amp; the Devouring Mothers &quot;Apocalypse Now (&amp; Later)&quot; (Audio)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/48fbH6aef2E?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tom Petty has been cited as an influence, but there are other varying similarities to other bands. <em>\u2018Amsterdam Hotel Room\u2019<\/em>, for example, has the lo-fi guitars of The Strokes while <em>\u2018Born In Black\u2019 <\/em>is reminiscent of The Gaslight Anthem. This variation is replicated in the topics of the songs. <em>\u2018The Friendship Song\u2019 <\/em>is an upbeat, down to earth track about friendship, while <em>\u2018The Apology Song\u2019 <\/em>is a slower, melancholy number on a broken relationship.<\/p>\n<p>The boring reality of mental illness is soundtracked by the droning intro to <em>\u2018Manic Depression\u2019<\/em>. Grace speaks over the repetitive chords, narrating its monotony. It\u2019s a contrast to the melodramatic <em>\u2018I Hate Chicago\u2019<\/em>, a swearing bout of anger confessing <em>\u201cthis is actually just another divorce song\u201d<\/em>. <em>\u2018Screamy Dreamy\u2019<\/em>, featuring a different vocalist, provides breathing space.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison to the music Grace has created elsewhere, it is doesn\u2019t feel as immediately energetic as we\u2019ve come to expect. Delve deeper, however, and listen to the lyrics and it\u2019s just as emotive, with the same ferocity Grace does so well.<\/p>\n<p>3\/5<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Bought To Rot\u2019<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0<b>Laura Jane Grace &amp;
