{"id":72491,"date":"2018-11-13T14:00:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T14:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=72491"},"modified":"2025-06-08T11:31:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-08T10:31:21","slug":"review-goldblume-husk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-goldblume-husk\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Goldblume &#8211; Husk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keen to experiment, Cambridgeshire band <strong>Goldblume <\/strong>shovelled math-rock, grunge, punk and alternative rock into a concrete mixer and out came their debut record \u2018<em>Husk<\/em>\u2019. Think of it as a piece of rocky road; a chocolatey base with chunks of biscuit, marshmallow and nuts. Giving you plenty to chew on, but with an unpredictability so you\u2019re never sure what the next mouthful will bring. Yes, it can be satisfying, but also a bit lumpy.<\/p>\n<p>When the three-piece say the songs &#8220;didn\u2019t come easily&#8221; you can understand why.\u00a0 Randomness is all well and good \u2013 see the band\u2019s key influence, Pixies \u2013 but making the songs feel natural is tricky and for the most part, the band do this well (Remember Engerica? Imagine their record without the tongue in its cheek). You can\u2019t fault \u2018<em>Tomorrow<\/em>\u2019, the big riff driven \u2018<em>Fiendish<\/em>\u2019, almost-ballad \u2018<em>Alice<\/em>\u2019, or the focused guitar work of \u2018<em>We All Know Why And Who<\/em>\u2019 but there are other parts that don\u2019t slot together so well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Goldblume - husk\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8oILeZi50Ms?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To the band\u2019s credit they self-produced and mixed \u2018<em>Husk<\/em>\u2019 themselves, but because of its Surfer Rosa stylings, it might have been wiser to ask an outside hand to guide their ideas or file off the edges on a few unusual and irksome stylistic choices.\u00a0 For every \u2018<em>Razor\u2019, <\/em>where interlocking riffs come flying from left and right, there\u2019s a moment when a few tweaks wouldn\u2019t have hurt.\u00a0 For example, different vocal styles are used throughout, some more effective than others. At times they\u2019re distractingly echoey or disjointed.<\/p>\n<p>The album closes with the three-part \u2018<em>Loose Fruits<\/em>\u2019 suite, a mixture of weird, draggy and awkward sections. While lyrics are often to personal taste, on \u2018<em>Loose Fruits<\/em> <em>Part 1\u2019<\/em> they\u2019re presented in a way that\u2019s difficult to digest. Maybe in a different context they wouldn\u2019t be so jarring. Thankfully the second part jettisons the vocals and becomes a satisfying riff-fest, leading to a far more solid conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Husk<\/em>\u2019 is an interesting, cohesive record of peaks and troughs and a promising step in <strong>Goldblume<\/strong>\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>3\/5<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<em>Husk<\/em>&#8216; by <strong>Goldblume<\/strong> is out now on <strong>Aaahh!!!
