{"id":72860,"date":"2018-11-20T13:00:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T13:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=72860"},"modified":"2018-11-19T21:53:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T21:53:36","slug":"review-cant-swim-this-too-wont-pass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-cant-swim-this-too-wont-pass\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Can&#8217;t Swim \u2013 This Too Won&#8217;t Pass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/603530.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72885 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/603530-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\"><\/a>Evil is everywhere on <strong>Can&#8217;t Swim<\/strong>&#8216;s second album, <em>&#8216;This Too Won&#8217;t Pass.&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0It is in the artwork, a devilish face in place of frontman Chris LoPorto&#8217;s ex-girlfriend, previously their recurring cover star. And it informs the songs, LoPorto more embittered than ever and with an unfavourable world-view in the wake of the split with said ex. <em>&#8220;Evil surrounds us and in time, becomes who we are,&#8221;<\/em> he has said of the album.<\/p>\n<p>The reception for 2017 debut\u00a0<em>&#8216;Fail You Again&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>was far from evil, its gritty basement rock winning wide plaudits, and although this outing is bleaker, it is quite possibly even better.\u00a0<em>&#8220;sometimes you meet the right people at the wrong times&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0is the band in a nutshell and the verses utilise LoPorto&#8217;s wonderful vowel delivery alongside an isolated rhythm section to great effect.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The devil took my life and let it burn&#8221;, <\/em>he murmurs on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Amnesia 666&#8217;, &#8220;but you ignite the flame.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0And the song itself ignites with ascending chorus chords and an increasingly pained LoPorto. Yes, he&#8217;s the frontman, but the man is part of <strong>Can&#8217;t Swim<\/strong>&#8216;s DNA in a way that is almost symbiotic. Can he really atone for hurt by sounding this anguished? We appreciate it, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Can&#039;t Swim &quot;Sometimes You Meet The Right People At The Wrong Times&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sUIZjqZYhDM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sonically, there isn&#8217;t progression, but thankfully they have taken everything that made\u00a0<em>&#8216;Fail You Again&#8217;<\/em><em>\u00a0s<\/em>o primal and dialled it up to eleven.<em> &#8216;My Queen&#8217;<\/em> fizzes with insistent but unobtrusive guitars and more delicious lyrical scorn:\u00a0<em>&#8220;If ignorance is bliss then why&#8217;d you ask?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Not The Way It Was&#8217;<\/em> is so genetically <strong>Can&#8217;t Swim<\/strong>-ish you may find yourself checking you haven&#8217;t shuffled back to\u00a0<em>&#8216;Fail You Again&#8217; \u2013\u00a0<\/em>it is pure melody and energy all wrapped up. And what&#8217;s that guttural scream punctuating an otherwise straight-up punk-rock stomper,\u00a0<em>&#8216;What Have We Done?&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0Ah, of course:\u00a0<em>&#8220;EVIL!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unapologetic;
