Their debut<em> \u2018None For One\u2019<\/em> has a clear 2000s sound, and will doubtless divide fans of their earlier work. It\u2019s not a metal album, but aspects of gothic and power metal shine through in between the more mainstream rock vibe here and there.<\/p>\n<p>On first listen, it\u2019s not immediately convincing \u2013 it just sounds like generic heavy rock. It takes a couple of plays through to appreciate properly. Take opener <em>\u2018Subhuman\u2019.<\/em> It doesn\u2019t grab attention straight away but the riff and chorus soon prove contagious, the track becoming a bit of an earworm. It\u2019s not a bad way for the band to announce themselves.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Given Time\u2019<\/em> shows a different side to <strong>Flat Earth<\/strong> &#8211; less bluster and more ballad. It\u2019s difficult not to be moved by Anttoni Pikkarainen\u2019s falsetto vocals, as he sings <em>\u201cI refuse to see\u201d<\/em>. <em>\u2018Blunt\u2019<\/em> is similar but less effective, as it possesses a less distinctive sound and the band appear to be going through the motions somewhat.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"FLAT EARTH - Given Time (Official Video) | Drakkar Entertainment 2018\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6GqUsbDSRZU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Largely, the band are best when the songs are more fast-paced. Title track <em>\u2018None For One\u2019<\/em> has the sort of gothic quality fans of HIM will appreciate. The eerie intro evokes comparisons with Evanescence\u2019s <em>\u2018Bring Me To Life\u2019<\/em> before the guitar really kicks in. It\u2019s something of a slow-burner but the emotion in the delivery is striking and the instrumental section near the end of the song is one of the best moments of the album. In contrast, \u2018Noble Swine\u2019 is loud, bold and pulsating from the off, with relentless drumming and wrath in the vocals.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an album that would be revolutionary by any stretch, but it is a decent rock record.
