\"image\"\u2018If I Should Go Before You\u2019<\/em> is City and Colour<\/strong>\u2019s fifth studio album and doesn\u2019t stray far from the band\u2019s previous work to date. As you\u2019d expect from Dallas Green, there are beautiful vocals aplenty, stripped-back guitars and gentle pop choruses, which should give current fans enough to enjoy, but there\u2019s nothing revolutionary here to set it apart from previous records.<\/p>\n

Green used his touring band as studio musicians for the first time on this album, giving the songs an uplifting, live-band feel. The musicians lay down a steady, coherent backdrop to Green\u2019s vocals, creating some memorable moments, such as \u2018Lover Come Back\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Blood\u2019<\/em>. Here, the folk-like jangling guitars compliment the full soul and power of Green\u2019s vocals and draws out the emotions in the songs.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

While this full-band effect harkens back to the days of the excellent \u2018Sometimes\u2019<\/em> record, \u2018If I Should Go Before You\u2019<\/em> doesn\u2019t manage to replicate the intrigue of this earlier work. The tempo stays largely consistent across the eleven tracks and several songs suffer from a lack of variation, in particular 9-minute sprawling opener \u2018Woman\u2019<\/em>. The first half of the record is heavy in falsetto which, although pleasant and well-delivered, takes away the soul and power of Green\u2019s full voice. Later tracks, such as the stand-out \u2018Friends\u2019<\/em>, which may be the best City and Colour<\/strong> song for some time, demonstrates that there\u2019s no substitute for the amazing tone of Green\u2019s full voice and to hear him belting this out more regularly would\u2019ve enhanced the record.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve heard previous City and Colour<\/strong> records before, you\u2019ll have a good idea of how \u2018If I Should Go Before You\u2019<\/em> will sound before you\u2019ve even heard a note. While the album succeeds in offering what you\u2019d expect, it offers little in the way of surprise or interest. As such, though the album is a decent listen, it isn\u2019t particularly memorable.<\/p>\n
