\"\"<\/a>Unearth<\/strong>\u2019s new album \u2018Extinction(s)\u2019<\/em> opens with a burst of discordant noise and chugging guitars telling you two things\/. Firstly, age hasn\u2019t tamed their approach, and secondly, they\u2019re squeezing their sound like a tube of toothpaste, wringing out just a little more freshness.<\/p>\n

Constructed around riffs from the metallic end of the metalcore spectrum \u2018Extinction(s)\u2019<\/em> sees Unearth<\/strong> treading familiar territory, but this time they\u2019re really exploring the boundaries. Yes, they thrive on aggressive pummelling, but there is so much more here. Every song feels like it has been lived inside and fleshed out, be it by wild sweep-picking on \u2018Incinerate<\/em>\u2019 or the slower sections on \u2018The Hunt Begins<\/em>\u2019, designed to build tension before hell breaks loose.<\/p>\n

So, while there is no shortage of breakdowns, each is earned with satisfying riff-work and comes across like a stampede. Ken Susi and Buzz Mcgrath are never content to play a straightforward style for long, adding careful little flourishes for effect. For example, take the subtle string bends that accentuate the expansive opening to \u2018King of the Arctic<\/em>\u2019 or the delicate guitar sounds that evoke fire on \u2018One With The Sun\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n
