Mixing melodic hardcore, post-hardcore and emo with flourishes of punk and metal, <i>\u2018Time Spent\u2019<\/i> is an incredibly brave and confident full-length that jumps around between sounds and scenes with wild abandon yet feels cohesive throughout. You can certainly understand what they\u2019re striving for, even if the methodology leaves you somewhat bewildered. <!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Part of the sound \u2013 or certainly the evolution of it \u2013 can be attributed to the vocal polyps Gilbert had to deal with, leading to a change in emphasis away from the heavier sound of 2014\u2019s <i>\u2018With Or Without\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s definitely a change for the better, showcasing a considerably more dextrous and progressive sound. However, Gilbert\u2019s more melodic vocals may take a little getting used to, sounding on occasions like the fourth member of the Beastie Boys. <\/p>\n<p>That said, more melodic cuts such as <i>\u2018Undertow\u2019<\/i> are hugely effective alongside the blistering hardcore blasts of <i>\u2018Try Hard\u2019<\/i> or <i> \u2018808\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s to <b>Household<\/b>\u2019s credit that it all hangs together so well. <\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Time Spent\u2019<\/i> is cleverly paced too. At 13 songs it feels slightly too long, and a couple of the earlier \u2018hardcore\u2019 songs could\u2019ve been cut, yet the latter half of the album in particular is wonderfully diverse. For example, the moody, mid-paced <i>\u2018Withered\u2019<\/i> breaks the relentlessness, while the endings to both <i>\u2018I\u2019ve Been Places\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018Guilty Gone\u2019<\/i> are genuinely inspired; the former stripped back and heartfelt, the latter a train of consciousness semi-spoken ramble. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s in these moments that Household excel, and there\u2019s similar flashes of inspiration buried throughout.
