The only warmth from a crackling fire. In a dark place,<strong> Commonwealth<\/strong>\u2019s music could be that flicker of hope. \u00a0When they describe their debut album \u2018<em>Everyone Around Me<\/em>\u2019 as <em>&#8220;honest music for the worn out soul&#8221;<\/em>, they hit the mark. An air of melancholy haunts each of the eleven tracks and yet, this isn\u2019t a despairing record, which is where its real strength lies.<\/p>\n<p>Formed in 2016, the Orange County band\u2019s first single \u2018<em>Father(s)<\/em>\u2019 caught the public\u2019s attention and it\u2019s not hard to see why. A painfully honest, emotionally stirring song, it has a power bordering on the uncomfortable, making for a striking listen. Re-recorded here, it has lost some of the original\u2019s rawness, but none of its potency. \u00a0However, it\u2019s the only one of these songs where Tyler St. Clair plunges quite so deep, and that\u2019s no bad thing.\u00a0 While he isn\u2019t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, he doesn\u2019t need to break apart is soul every time. Doing that would create a dark, miserable album, and this blatantly isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"CommonWealth - Fear (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LnhaMVLpp7E?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Runaway<\/em>\u2019 bristles with optimism and you can\u2019t miss the brighter composition of \u2018<em>Happy<\/em>\u2019. An almost ironic title because, as always, St. Clair\u2019s lyrics err toward the maudlin, but its presentation is uplifting. Songs like <em>\u2018Lost\u2019<\/em> and \u2018<em>Vinyl<\/em>\u2019 toe the line between confessional and powerful, proving the band\u2019s songwriting talent wasn\u2019t a one-off. In fact, every song is of a high standard.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the band\u2019s atmospheric approach and their frontman\u2019s introspective nature, there is a sense of grandeur here, most prominently on opener \u2018<em>Fear<\/em>\u2019, but continuing throughout. The record feels big, as though <strong>Commonwealth<\/strong> have their eyes on larger sized venues, where these songs would fit comfortably.\u00a0Chances are this record\u2019s thought-provoking, accessible sound could propel them there. It\u2019s certainly one you\u2019ll be wondering about once its runtime plays out.
