{"id":74814,"date":"2019-01-22T15:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=74814"},"modified":"2023-02-24T14:51:09","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T14:51:09","slug":"review-wars-as-within-so-without-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-wars-as-within-so-without-ep\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: wars &#8211; As Within \/\/ So Without EP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/distortedsoundmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/as-within-so-without-wars.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">It&#8217;s two years since <strong>wars<\/strong> released the well-received full-length <em>&#8216;We Are Islands, After All&#8217;<\/em>, and the Rugby post-hardcore group might have been expected to be bringing out a follow-up album about now, rather than a brief EP.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>&#8216;As Within \/\/ So Without&#8217;<\/em>&#8216;s existence may be related to the band&#8217;s move to A Wolf At Your Door Records, and could be a precursor to a prospective album later this year. It certainly promises big future plans, with closing track <em>&#8216;In A Mirror, Dimly&#8217;<\/em> debuted on the BBC Radio One Rock Show.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the most compact track on the offering and the most effective for it \u2013 growling riffs give way to an assured, uncomplicated hook. It&#8217;s <strong>wars<\/strong> compressed into a little over two and a half minutes \u2013 far from revolutionary post-hardcore, but laced with a conviction that makes for easy consumption.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Wars - Little Death\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SvFKe_2fD5U?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Scorn and Fidelity&#8217;<\/em> plays with greater variation in tempos and effects pedals, but the neat guitar flicks beneath Rob Vicars&#8217; screamed verses remain razor-sharp. The juxtaposition of Vicars with guitarist Sam Barnard&#8217;s clean vocals echoes many similar acts, but contemporaries Our Hollow, Our Home are the most direct comparison.<\/p>\n<p>The disjointed feel of &#8216;Little Death&#8217; may be intentional, parts and paces chopping and changing abruptly, but it&#8217;s the least satisfying quarter of the EP, not helped by a dreaded fade-in. Its melodic section is also weak, not quite saved by a stripped-away section featuring layers of multi-layered, whispered vocals.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of <em>&#8216;As Within \/\/ So Without&#8217;<\/em> is certainly its strongest, led by <em>&#8216;On Being More&#8217;<\/em> and its pulsating central riff. It also brings the heaviest moment in the breakdown, but <strong>wars<\/strong> are going for incision over demolition, and Vicars&#8217; growl stays fairly warm.<\/p>\n<p>This EP could well be but an appetiser for <strong>wars<\/strong>&#8216; future output, but if so, it holds promise for the main course.
