Now as they deliver their 10th album, <em>\u2018Who Do You Trust?\u2019<\/em>, the quartet appears to be at a crossroads. Embracing pop-rock textures alongside the anthem rock that has served the band well for so long. However, the end result is a jarring record that is fairly questionable.<\/p>\n<p>It all starts pretty reasonable with the modern rap-rock pairing of<em> \u2018The Ending\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Renegade Music\u2019<\/em>. On the former, hedonistic synths complement Jacoby Shaddix\u2019s vocals in the verse before giving away with to a bold chorus. The latter is <strong>Papa Roach<\/strong> at their most visceral with a chorus straight out of WWE PPV circa 2010; simple, bombastic and memorable.<\/p>\n<p>Much like 2017\u2019s <em>\u2018Crooked Teeth\u2019<\/em>, <em>\u2018WDYT?\u2019<\/em> takes some missteps in an attempt to broaden the band\u2019s sound. Take<em> \u2018Elevate\u2019<\/em> for example. Its brooding hip-hop instrumentation and annoying <em>\u201cWoah-oh! lift me high up\u201d<\/em> is uncomfortably reminiscent of Imagine Dragons. Later on, <em>\u2019Top Of The World\u2019<\/em> sees them tread on the same ground with the same results. Whereas <em>\u2018Come Around\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Feel Like Home\u2019<\/em> provide a double slice of admirable pop-rock executed well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Papa Roach - Who Do You Trust? (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B_CMtaNtiNE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Considerably the lowest point is<em> \u2019Problems\u2019.<\/em> The combination of &#8216;<em>woe is me&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0lyricism and electro-pop atmospherics makes for an uneasy listen. Nevertheless, you have to applaud <strong>Papa Roach<\/strong> to continuously take risks and show a willingness to stylistically evolve.<\/p>\n<p>The punk-fuelled <em>\u2018I Suffer Well\u2019<\/em> thankfully puts the album back on track with its buzzsaw guitars and angst-ridden vocals. While <em>\u2018Maniac\u2019<\/em>, an intense number that sees Shaddix reflect on past struggles, keeps up the momentum by nicely blending hard rock guitars with melodic synths.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clear on<em> &#8216;Who Do You Trust?&#8217;<\/em> that <strong>Papa Roach<\/strong> have one eye on reinventing themselves yet reasonably maintain their alt-rock core.
