We\u2019re talking riffs here, the London power-trio grab you by both ears with their brand of heavy metal guitar abuse. \u00a0Having caught the attention of Spinefarm Records with 2016\u2019s EP \u2018<em>Vol II<\/em>\u2019, their career has been on an upward trajectory. Recent tours supporting a diverse range of bands whetted the appetite for debut album \u2018<em>The GOAT<\/em>\u2019 and it doesn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Puppy<\/strong> use a logo blatantly winking at Def Leopard and a quick scroll through their music videos reveals hijinks galore, so it\u2019s fair to say the band don\u2019t take themselves too seriously. What they do take seriously is riffs. Popular single \u2018<em>Black Hole<\/em>\u2019 has mountains of them, with a great big riffy outro for good measure. It\u2019s an extremely catchy style, but importantly it\u2019s not the only sound in their repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for something to bang your head along to? Try \u2018<em>Vengeance<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>World Stands Still<\/em>\u2019. Fancy a bit of grubby shredding? You\u2019ll find it on \u2018<em>I Feel An Evil<\/em>\u2019. Things slow down on \u2018<em>Just Like You<\/em>\u2019 so Will Michael can show off his bass skills, but it\u2019s never long before Billy Howard\u2019s drumming whips the pace back up.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Puppy - Black Hole\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xm0jDFv-0iU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When Jock Norton isn\u2019t cranking out the Zeppelin-troubling fretwork, he provides lead vocals and it\u2019s here the band might prove divisive; the singing is harmonious and an unusual fit, imagine a 90\u2019s grunge record or even the era\u2019s pop-rock scene. Yet, it works really well, giving the twelve songs a slightly nostalgic air and fitting snugly with the pleasing production. It\u2019s an unexpected sound but a powerful one.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Nightwalker<\/em>\u2019 shows just how well this softer side works.
