Nevertheless, their rise from deathcore rookies to arena-smashing rock stars emphasises <strong>BMTH<\/strong>&#8216;s defiant and carefree attitude. 2015&#8217;s <i>&#8216;That&#8217;s The Spirit&#8217;<\/i>&#8216;s solidified their status at the top of rock&#8217;s elite, so to state that their sixth full-length, <i>&#8216;amo&#8217;<\/i>, is highly anticipated would be an understatement.<\/p>\n<p>In the months leading up to its release, frontman Oli Sykes stated the album as &#8220;experimental&#8221; yet <i>&#8216;MANTRA&#8217;<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Wonderful Life&#8217;<\/i> countered that by coming off as fairly safe choices. However, on hearing <i>&#8216;amo&#8217;<\/i>, the Sheffield band have certainly stuck to their words.\u00a0<strong>BMTH<\/strong> have increasingly shown a willingness to embrace their pop sensibilities and <em>&#8216;amo&#8217;<\/em> sees them go all out.<\/p>\n<p>Initial playthroughs of the record are jarring, even baffling at times. While\u00a0<i>&#8216;MANTRA&#8217;<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Wonderful Life&#8217;<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em>show <strong>BMTH<\/strong> are more than capable of still producing bristling rock songs, <em>&#8216;amo&#8217;<\/em> is interlaced with elements of EDM, electro-pop, drum n&#8217; bass, with varying results. <em>&#8216;Nihilist Blues&#8217;<\/em> throbs with a thumping beat and unrecognisable vocals from Sykes, before alt-pop songstress Grimes appears with a growlingly favourable hook.\u00a0The slick synth-pop-rock jam that is <em>&#8216;Medicine&#8217;,<\/em> along with the insatiable <em>&#8216;mother tongue&#8217;,<\/em> offers two of the albums most infectious choruses, whether you like it or not. Whereas\u00a0<em>&#8216;sugar honey ice &amp; tea&#8217;<\/em> basically blends\u00a0the old <strong>BMTH<\/strong> with the new; thick riffs and dense drums complement a harmonious, addictive chorus melody.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Bring Me The Horizon - medicine (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MocF43ncu8I?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, when you experiment, there&#8217;s sure to be some unsavoury results. The brooding &#8216;<em>Why You Got To Kick Me When I\u2019m Down?&#8217;<\/em> sees Sykes attempting mumble rap. While<em> &#8216;Fresh Bruises&#8217;<\/em> is a pointless, three-minute interlude of atmospheric synth-pop with tweaked vocals. In contrast, orchestral\u00a0finale\u00a0<em>&#8216;I Don&#8217;t Know What to Say&#8217;<\/em> is fairly routine and an emotional affair, albeit one that outstays its welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless,<em> &#8216;Heavy Metal&#8217;<\/em> balances it all out, showing that mixing up styles can be brilliantly executed. Essentially Sykes gives one gigantic middle finger to the band&#8217;s critics\u00a0while embracing the album-wide theme of &#8220;love&#8221;;\u00a0<em>\u201call I wanna know do you love me anymore? cuz some kid on the gram said he used to be a fan but this shit ain\u2019t heavy metal\u201d<\/em> with\u00a0monstrous instrumentation, beatboxing courtesy of Rahzel and a brief reprisal of Sykes&#8217; screaming past.<\/p>\n<p>Overall,<em> &#8216;amo&#8217;<\/em> is inconsistent yet commendable.
