\"\"It started with a trickle but is now approaching a deluge. Bands from this little corner of the world are currently doing a fine job after pitching up on US indies \u2013 Milk Teeth, Neck Deep and Moose Blood all instantly spring to mind. The latest to chance their arm \u2013 Dublin\u2019s The Winter Passing<\/b>, who\u2019ve pitched up with FITA over here and 6131 over there \u2013 is the most intriguing yet.<\/figure>\n

Yet it\u2019s easy to see the attraction of The Winter Passing<\/b>. Edgy yet melodious, their indie-tinged pop-punk is packed with hooks and heart. Duelling vocals between brother sister pair Rob and Kate Flynn add a whole other dimension to the group\u2019s sound and sets them apart from their similarly sounding peers.<\/p>\n

Throw in a heavy dose of lyrical irony and biting cynicism and you have the makings of a band on the cusp of something spectacular.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the first thing you\u2019ll notice though is just how great \u2018A Different Space of Mind\u2019<\/i> sounds. Bob Cooper and Aiden Cunningham have done a stellar job in ensuring all the subtleties and nuances and flourishes stand out and it really brings \u2018A Different Space of Mind\u2019<\/i> to life. The drums on \u2018Flowerpot\u2019<\/i> sounds like exploding bombs, while the loud quiet dynamic of \u2018The Fever\u2019<\/i> is wonderfully realised and executed and the delicate xylophone on \u2018Penny Chains\u2019<\/i> sparkle, for example.<\/p>\n

So \u2018A Different Space of Mind\u2019<\/i> sounds great, but The Winter Passing<\/b> also thought to include some killer songs too. The glorious \u2018Bottle Green\u2019<\/i> is the pick of the bunch \u2013 a rip-roaring, no-frills pop-punk anthem in the vein of The Get Up Kids which could light up any autumnal evening, while the driving and hugely infectious \u2018Daisy\u2019<\/i> highlights the brilliant vocal interplay between the Flynns.<\/p>\n

In these up tempo moments, The Winter Passing<\/b> are really at their best. Slower, more considered efforts such as the title track and \u2018Creak\u2019<\/i> (which is somewhat lyrically overwrought) lack the same impact. While they\u2019re not bad songs \u2013 in fact far from it \u2013 they just don\u2019t have the punch of the more immediate cuts and serve to slow the album down.<\/p>\n

That said, The Winter Passing<\/b> have now found themselves on the same label as the likes of Dads, Hemingway and Better Off (Stateside at least). Not only do they fit in perfectly, with \u2018A Different Space of Mind\u2019<\/i> they\u2019ve unleashed an album that could well become a future classic for the label. It\u2019s certainly on a par with Dads\u2019 \u2018Pretty Good\u2019<\/i> and Better Off\u2019s \u2018(I Think) I\u2019m Leaving\u2019<\/i>, and in delivering such an assured debut full-length, you couldn\u2019t really ask for anything more.<\/p>\n
