{"id":75884,"date":"2019-02-13T15:00:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T15:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=75884"},"modified":"2023-04-07T14:25:23","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T13:25:23","slug":"review-northshore-for-what-its-worth-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-northshore-for-what-its-worth-ep\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Northshore &#8211; For What It&#8217;s Worth EP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-75886\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/796136-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"229\" title=\"\">In the words of\u00a0<strong>Northshore<\/strong>, 2018 &#8220;wasn&#8217;t easy by any means&#8221; for the Middlesbrough pop-punks.\u00a0Just as they built up to the release of their second EP,<em>\u00a0<\/em>vocalist Ben Vickers left the band near the end of November, with personal reasons cited.\u00a0<em>&#8216;For What It&#8217;s Worth&#8217;<\/em> had been recorded in Vickers&#8217; flat on the North-East coast.<\/p>\n<p>A resulting air of intrigue surrounds the EP, the ex-frontman&#8217;s voice delivering the lyrics that will now be performed live by bassist Dan Shepherd.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly Vickers&#8217; flawless falsetto sections of the title track are impossible to ignore and it follows to lament that the band no longer boasts those talents, but the track&#8217;s composition is subsistent. Melodic sensibilities abound and the guitar and drum production is noticeably polished for a self-release.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"NORTHSHORE - &quot;For What It&#039;s Worth&quot; (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IsFxfoR8oNI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Be Heard&#8217;<\/em>&#8216;s urges the listener to open up about anxieties, and the optimistic vibe is supported by an explosive barrage of riffs that have a summery feel. Speaking of which,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Summer&#8217;<\/em> has a head-spinningly reverb-engulfed section that is slightly underused, the track advancing to more straightforward overdriven sounds.<\/p>\n<p>The hopeful sentiment also informs\u00a0<em>&#8216;Shedding Skin&#8217;<\/em>; &#8220;j<em>ust because you were golden before doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t be that again.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0The applaudable message doesn&#8217;t quite save a plodding, mid-tempo number however, and neither does the appearance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/ChristinaShoutsOut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christina Rotondo,<\/a>\u00a0although her voice isn&#8217;t a bad fit by any means.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Conspiracy&#8217;<\/em> is similarly uninspiring and also overlong, a guitar solo and modulation feeling obliged rather than at all climactic or adding anything to the song. Neatly intersecting a cappella sections close it EP, however, with a certain sad poignancy to Vickers delivering the final notes of the EP.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;For What It&#8217;s Worth<\/em>&#8216; isn&#8217;t earth-shattering but nor is it disappointing; it does what an EP should and provides a flavour of what the act will be capable of in future.
