Enter Bordeaux four-piece <strong>The Sunday Sadness<\/strong> and their self-titled EP; an ambitious and eclectic collection of songs with synth-wave at its heart.<\/p>\n<p>Over the seven tracks the band are asking the question; What if My Chemical Romance era bands made dark pop? The fusion of these two sounds results in distant, almost robotic, music infused with a heartfelt singing style. It\u2019s a powerful approach. For instance, the beats of \u2018<em>The Hunger<\/em>\u2019 contrast with a great vocal hook Craig Owens and his ilk would be proud of. Of course, it\u2019s all smothered with effects, but that\u2019s part of the aesthetic. Reverb, gated drums, it\u2019s all there, but there\u2019s more too and that\u2019s where <strong>The Sunday Sadness<\/strong> succeed.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TSS - Someone (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JTx9i7H9BJM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While single \u2018<em>Someone<\/em>\u2019 could have started life as a cover version of New Order\u2019s<em> \u2018True Faith\u2019<\/em> on subsequent songs they bring more to the table. \u2018<em>Damn I Hate It<\/em>\u2019 even draws on 90\u2019s dance music, putting them alongside bands like The Black Queen or Gunship who are really pushing this sound.<\/p>\n<p>According to vocalist Matthieu Kirby, they tried a <em>&#8220;thousand different arrangements&#8221;<\/em> for these songs, and it really does feel like they\u2019ve pushed themselves to create immersive and interesting soundscapes. Just listen to the contrast of plodding beats and brighter synths on \u2018<em>High Beam<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>At times, they don\u2019t succeed quite so well.
