\"MillencolinThey might have been going for over 25 years now, but Swedish punks Millencolin<\/strong> show no signs of slowing down as their ninth album ‘SOS’,<\/em> attempts to combine the heavier hardcore sound of their earlier albums with the pop-punk sensibilities of their 2000s releases.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s certainly fast \u2013 opener, and title track,\u00a0‘SOS’,<\/em> is a ruthless, a three-and-a-half-minute assault on the ears. The rapid guitar combined with the anguished cries of \u201cThe lights go out on tainted sky\/An SOS is passing by\u201d<\/em> from frontman Nikola \u0160ar\u010devi\u0107 create a sense of frantic desperation. It\u2019s a strong start from the quartet.<\/p>\n

Naming a song after an internet meme \u2013 in this case ‘Yanny & Laurel’<\/em> \u2013 might be seen as a desperate attempt to remain ‘down with the kids’, but it works in this instance. The blend of melodic hardcore and straightforward hard rock makes it one of the more interesting tracks. It\u2019s followed by the equally impressive ‘Reach You’<\/em>, as the album enters something of a purple patch. Next up is ‘Do You Want War’.<\/em> Anthemic with a capital \u2018A\u2019, \u0160ar\u010devi\u0107\u2019s vocals take on a rougher quality. The overdrive-laden riff at the beginning soon gives way to shouts of \u201cDo you want\/Do you want\/Do you want war now?\u201d<\/em> over a throbbing drum beat.<\/p>\n
