{"id":76292,"date":"2019-02-19T14:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T14:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=76292"},"modified":"2023-04-07T14:25:19","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T13:25:19","slug":"review-ghost-iris-apple-of-discord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-ghost-iris-apple-of-discord\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Ghost Iris &#8211; Apple of Discord"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-76293\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/093915-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\">Hailing from Denmark, <strong>Ghost Iris<\/strong> built a career on Bandcamp before breaking out with debut record \u2018<em>Anecdotes of Science and Soul<\/em>\u2019 and became the country\u2019s most streamed metal band with their second, \u2018<em>Blind World<\/em>\u2019. After making a name on the international stage by playing Euroblast and Tech-Fest, they&#8217;re determined to do everything in their power to continue that upward trajectory with their new album, \u2018<em>Apple of Discord<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>While the band\u2019s previous records leant heavily on angular djent riffs and scratchy guitar sounds, this time around both elements are less prominent. Instead, the focus is on big grooves, built around more straightforward song structures. Although Nicklas Gr\u00f8nlund Thomsen isn\u2019t afraid to explore\u00a0the fretboard, much of his work has a direct feel, with less time spent building atmosphere, but that\u2019s no bad thing. You\u2019ll find yourself bobbing along to the music\u2019s flow, especially when the band show off a heavier side with the frantic stomp of<em> \u2018After The Sun Sets Part II\u2019<\/em> and the brutal <em>\u2018Heaven Was Pure Hell\u2019<\/em>, yet even these songs contain a solid dose of melody.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Ghost Iris - The Devil&#039;s Plaything (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jwxO5BXtQFw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jesper Vicencio\u2019s vocals are the band\u2019s big draw;\u00a0powerful, accessible, wide-ranging, and extremely catchy. Yes, there are plenty of death growls but they take second place, as heard on the infectious single \u2018<em>Cowardly Pride<\/em>\u2019. Similarly, the chorus of \u2018<em>Final Tale<\/em>\u2019 would not sound of\u00a0place on a dancefloor. These poppier sensibilities are felt strongest on \u2018<em>Beauty In Expiration<\/em>\u2019, which contains a heavily auto-tuned guest vocal from Don Vedda that could have been culled from a Jackson Five record. It feels little out of place but shows the band&#8217;s willingness to push their sound.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, <strong>Ghost Iris<\/strong> are trying to hit big with their new album, surrendering some of their depth and nuance in favour of a powerful, appealing sound.
