Thankfully, we have <strong>Badflower<\/strong> to rescue us, providing a sleek, well-oiled alternative. Hard-hitting and emphatic, <em>&#8216;OK, I\u2019m Sick&#8217;<\/em> is an impressive debut that is set to make us anything but.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIs there anyone out there looking out for me?\u201d<\/em> howls frontman Josh Katz on <em>&#8216;The Jester&#8217;<\/em>. Even at this early stage of the album, <strong>Badflower<\/strong> resolutely underlines what they\u2019re about; hard rock with arena-sized choruses. Sometimes there\u2019s a tinge of pop-punk, as on the opener <em>&#8216;x ANA x&#8217;<\/em>, while sometimes the music takes on more of a classic bluesy quality. For example, the anti-Trump <i>&#8216;Die&#8217;<\/i> thrives on heavy blues-rock. They don\u2019t always keep it PG. On <i>&#8216;Daddy&#8217;<\/i>, a driving anthemic rock track, we get rather dark lyrics about how <em>&#8220;Daddy gives it all \u2018cause he loves you the most&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Badflower - Heroin\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/79EjzCJlSYE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Heroin&#8217;<\/em> is rather self-explanatory, starting off slow by <strong>Badflower<\/strong>\u2019s standards, before the chorus arrives at the first sign of distortion. Throughout, an underlying sense of vulnerability permeates through. For a band who open an album with <em>&#8220;I\u2019m clenching my face and I\u2019m touching my dick&#8221;<\/em> in the first verse, lyrics in the vein of <em>&#8220;Take the blade away from me\/I am a freak&#8221;<\/em> are perhaps surprising, but it\u2019s here where <strong>Badflower<\/strong> are at their strongest.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it can sound a bit <em>too<\/em> polished. <em>&#8216;OK, I\u2019m Sick&#8217;<\/em> is their debut, after all, and a bit more grit and rawness wouldn\u2019t go amiss. It\u2019s reminiscent of when Royal Blood arrived on the scene, ready-made for commercial rock radio. That said, it\u2019s merely a minor gripe about what is an impressive collection of songs. It\u2019s a powerful release \u2013 <strong>Badflower<\/strong> have crafted an album that is bold and tender in equal measure.
