Of course, 1994\u2019s<em> &#8216;Blue Album&#8217;<\/em> is still held as a classic and rightly so. While<em> &#8216;Green&#8217;,<\/em> <em>&#8216;Red&#8217;<\/em> and 2016&#8217;s <em>&#8216;White&#8217;<\/em> album proved to be strong outings for River Cuomo and company. The latter being seen as a return to form. Whereas &#8216;Teal&#8217;, a polarising throwaway collection of covers probably shouldn\u2019t be recognised as part of the series.<\/p>\n<p>So with evidence of a promising outing, the latest colour instalment, <em>&#8216;Black&#8217;,<\/em> turns out to be a massive disappointment with horrific results. If you thought <em>&#8216;Raditude&#8217;<\/em> and <em>&#8216;Hurley&#8217;<\/em> were career low points, then be prepared to stomach a set of slick, at times, lyrically cringey songs that have very few redeeming qualities.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, we understand <strong>Weezer<\/strong> don\u2019t want to tread on past glories but when Cuomo is serving up lyrics such as <em>\u201cI don\u2019t know karate or Kung fu but I\u2019m going to make it in this world\u201d<\/em> (See the reggae rock-tinged <em>&#8216;Zombie Bastards&#8217;<\/em>), you\u2019d be pleading for another <em>&#8216;Pinkerton&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Weezer - High As A Kite (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mH7XhHEb-ck?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From the awkward rapping on the Latin flavoured opener, <em>&#8216;Can&#8217;t Knock the Hustle&#8217;<\/em>, to the funky <em>&#8216;Living in L.A.&#8217;<\/em> to the glam rock stomp of <em>&#8216;The Prince Who Wanted Everything&#8217;<\/em>,<em> &#8216;Black&#8217;<\/em> really doesn\u2019t have much going for it. Ironically, <em>&#8216;I\u2019m Just Being Honest&#8217;<\/em> sees Cuomo sums it up perfectly as he sings about turning off a demo halfway through as it sounds like shit. It\u2019s just how we felt six songs deep.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s a beacon of hope on here, it\u2019s the lofty 70s piano pop <em>&#8216;High As A Kite&#8217;<\/em>. Its harmonious delivery has hints of the <strong>Weezer<\/strong> we loved. Yet it\u2019s all forgotten about by the time you get to the instrumentally tinny <em>&#8216;Byzantine<\/em><em>&#8216;<\/em> and psychedelic electropop\/hip-hop closer <em>&#8216;California Snow&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a blatant attempt to stay relevant or the sound of a band simply not caring anymore, is left open for debate.
