\u201cI’ve got no sense of direction or what to do<\/em>\u201d sings Bad Suns<\/strong>\u2019 lead vocalist Christo Bowman on \u2018Away We Go\u2019<\/i>, the opening track of their third album \u2018Mystic Truth\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s a good starting point for the album; indeed, it seems Bad Suns<\/strong> do have a sense of direction. By now, they\u2019ve garnered attention as a solid, moderately successful indie act \u2013 touring with The 1975, putting out a couple of albums \u2013 you get the gist.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fitting that this album comes out during the first part of spring \u2013 it\u2019s an uplift from the drudgery of winter and the post-festive slump. Riding a wave of pulsating drums and melodic guitar, for the most part, give \u2018Mystic Truth\u2019<\/em> a wholly positive feel. Admittedly, the lyrics Bowman sings aren\u2019t always the most optimistic \u2013 as can be seen above \u2013 but the music belies the words.<\/p>\n

On occasion it can verge on the trite; the backing vocals in \u2018A Miracle, A Mile Away\u2019<\/em> are difficult to take seriously. But when Bad Suns<\/strong> wear their hearts on their sleeves, no-one is going to be laughing. \u2018Darkness Arrives (And Departs)\u2019<\/i> is a genuinely moving song, starting off reminiscent of Green Day\u2019s seminal \u2018Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)\u2019<\/i>, before leading into an atmospheric, emotive chorus.<\/p>\n
