{"id":77353,"date":"2019-03-20T14:00:12","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T14:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=77353"},"modified":"2023-04-07T14:24:25","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T13:24:25","slug":"review-sleep-in-the-stars-on-your-ceiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-sleep-in-the-stars-on-your-ceiling\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Sleep In. \u2013\u00a0The Stars on Your Ceiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77365 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/198203-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\">Ever since <strong>Sleep In<\/strong>. arrived five years ago with exciting debut LP <em>&#8216;Settling&#8217;<\/em>, there have been many to note the New Jersey band&#8217;s potential. <em>&#8216;Settling&#8217;<\/em> had a vibrant fire to its headstrong emo, a record that loved its influences. Graduating to 2017 EP, &#8216;<em>Tension &amp; Release&#8217;<\/em>, the sound had been polished into something that, come a sophomore full-length release, would surely evolve into something very promising indeed.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;The Stars on Your Ceiling&#8217;<\/em> proves to be not quite that, <strong>Sleep In.<\/strong> still largely present and correct in relation to what was presented on <em>&#8216;Settling&#8217;<\/em>, but that feels like a step back.<\/p>\n<p>The melodies of\u00a0<em>&#8216;A Million Messages&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Splitting Clouds&#8217;<\/em> exemplify the way songs come across as fun but slightly lacklustre \u2013 as if they would benefit being redrafted, with new arrangements, or lyrics, or\u00a0<em>something<\/em>. They&#8217;re not inadequate \u2013 more like they don&#8217;t feel quite enough, like an appetiser for a main meal.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Sleep In. - Splitting Clouds [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gHF0y3L0jSU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Closest to suppressing the hunger is\u00a0<em>&#8216;Deena&#8217;<\/em>, a blast of an opener that fizzes with joy and a real unshackled vibrancy that promises so much for the rest of the album. Unfortunately, <em>&#8216;Honest Eyes&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>is representative of the bulk of what follows, its prominent lead guitar forgettable and a low vocal melody one of Tom Fowler&#8217;s most average.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Anyway&#8217;<\/em> is something of a miniature version of the record, its tantalising bed of hovering organ and picked guitar progressing to something that ultimately goes through the motions, and doesn&#8217;t justify a rare four-minute length.\u00a0The other &#8216;long&#8217; track is the soft\u00a0<em>&#8216;Let Me Let You Let Me&#8217;<\/em>, and it proves to be far more effective, a measured ballad that at least ends things on a high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleep In.<\/strong> somewhat fail to live up to expectation on\u00a0<em>&#8216;The Stars on Your Ceiling&#8217;<\/em>, but it doesn&#8217;t mean the band doesn&#8217;t possess talent.
