{"id":77675,"date":"2019-03-29T10:30:55","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T10:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=77675"},"modified":"2023-04-07T14:23:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T13:23:50","slug":"review-i-prevail-trauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-i-prevail-trauma\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: I Prevail \u2013 Trauma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-77676\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Trauma-Cover-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\">It\u2019s difficult to have an identity crisis if you never defined who you are. <strong>I Prevail<\/strong> made their name with an &#8220;easycore&#8221; cover of Taylor Swift and their debut album couldn\u2019t decide what it wanted to be, one song totally different from the next. <em>\u2018Trauma\u2019<\/em> suffers the same problem, it\u2019s like they\u2019re moving away from their roots without ever defining what those roots were. Hence, it\u2019s an awkward, uncomfortable journey.<\/p>\n<p>Kicking off with easycore, \u2018<em>Bow Down<\/em>\u2019 is the heaviest song they\u2019ve written, all wrapped in a whirring synthetic sound and chopped up production. Smooth choruses come wooshing in and then, weirdly, it wanders off into a synthscape before plonking in another heavy section. It\u2019s an electro-metal mess and it\u2019s the whole record in miniature.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas are flung around to see what sticks and even if they do, it\u2019s too late because the next one is barging it out of the way. At best you get a stuttery R&amp;B song in the vein of Emarosa, at worst you end up with the swirly-whirly dubstep soup of \u2018<em>Rise Above It<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"I Prevail - Bow Down (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n2EjeMx4bSg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Under the guiding hand of producer Tyler Smith, the sound is slick, but the songs heavily rely on his input. Disparate elements are spliced together under the misapprehension that pasting in a smooth chorus will solve everything, and to be fair, sometimes you don\u2019t notice how hollow and jarring the whole thing is.<\/p>\n<p>Songs like \u2018<em>Every Time You Leave<\/em>\u2019 thrive on huge hooky choruses and Brian Burkheiser\u2019s voice is bright and glossy, but despite a near career-ending vocal injury, he doesn\u2019t play on fragility.
