{"id":77681,"date":"2019-03-29T11:00:50","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T11:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=77681"},"modified":"2023-04-07T14:23:46","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T13:23:46","slug":"review-the-maine-you-are-ok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-the-maine-you-are-ok\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: The Maine &#8211; You Are Ok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77686 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/the-maine-you-are-ok-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\">There can be a tendency for bands in the pop-punk\/emo\/indie mould to fall, off the wheels after they\u2019ve been together for a while but on this, their seventh album, <strong>The Maine<\/strong> captivate and entertain almost faultlessly.<\/p>\n<p>By and large, it&#8217;s an accessible album that&#8217;s not quite as heavy as some of their previous work; there&#8217;s a strong pop sensibility here. With <em>\u2018Slip the Noose\u2019<\/em>, they choose a convincing opener. Its minimalist intro gives way to emphatic guitar bursts. Luckily, they don\u2019t let up for the rest of the album.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Numb Without You\u2019<\/em> in particular stands out. Both the music and lyrical matter are intense, with the passion in vocalist John O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s voice shining through as he sings &#8220;<em>You are the violence in my veins\/You are the war inside my brain&#8221;<\/em>. Matching it for intensity is<em> \u2018Heaven, We\u2019re Already Here\u2019<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s not the most experimental thing they\u2019ve ever done, but in terms of sheer pop-punk spirit and anthemic quality, it has both in spades.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Maine - Numb Without You (Lyric Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mT7epF0DfeM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When they take a more stripped-back approach, it\u2019s just as effective. <em>\u2018Forevermore\u2019<\/em> has little more than vocals and an acoustic guitar, but the lack of glitz works in <strong>The Maine<\/strong>\u2019s favour. It offers a break from the more upbeat tracks either side. Likewise, <em>\u2018Flowers on the Grave\u2019<\/em> is a lengthy closer, at over nine minutes long, but it manages to be pretty enthralling. It twists and turns, almost dipping into shoegaze before the final repeated line of \u201c<i>I was on the verge of breaking down\/Then you came around.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there\u2019s a solid balance between light-hearted and mature, radio-friendly and thought-provoking cuts, that nicely suits where <strong>The Maine<\/strong> are in 2019.
