More often than not resulting in a one-time effort, so it\u2019s great to hear <strong>Trade Wind<\/strong> have found time to not just re-group, but produce a second full-length album; \u2018<em>Certain Freedoms<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The brainchild of Jesse Barnett (Stick to Your Guns) and Tom Williams (Stray From The Path), they previously explored a different sonic spectrum, building songs around gentle swirls of guitar effects and sung vocals. This time around they\u2019re treading more experimental ground, giving up the huge choruses and instead doubling down on atmosphere, creating a tonally different album. It&#8217;s more relaxed and nebulous than you may expect.<\/p>\n<p>Williams has a deep love of effects pedals and it\u2019s key to the band\u2019s sound. His wash-like soundscapes provide flow and depth, but they\u2019re thoughtfully executed. Even the slightest adjustment to what he plays tugs at the heartstrings. The rhythm section too, particularly drummer Andrew McEnaney, is important, carefully shaping the album\u2019s direction. You can\u2019t fault the masterful way they play together and you can hear the beauty in the tranquil seas of subtlety they create.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TRADE WIND - No King But Me (Official Audio)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dYxaMg9dIwo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Keeping everything ruthlessly short means it\u2019s a focused record, but you\u2019re left wishing they explored a little more, especially on songs like \u2018<em>How\u2019s Your Head<\/em>\u2019 which begins fading out before it\u2019s really got going. \u00a0At its best, \u2018<em>I Can\u2019t Believe You\u2019re Gone<\/em>\u2019 captures your attention by marrying a beautiful melody within its sweeping soundscape. Similarly, the louder \u2018<em>Close Encounters (of the 3rd Floor)<\/em>\u2019 excellently plays with fuzz and a muted yell, accentuated by an enormous swirl of a chorus, its soft-centred shoegaze and spine-tingling execution.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Certain Freedoms<\/em>\u2019 is an exploration of sonic space, and while you may miss the straightforward honesty of their earlier work, <strong>Trade Wind<\/strong> play with a tapestry of sounds both alien and beautiful to create a strange, ethereal record.
