Right there you\u2019ve pretty much got all the ingredients for their music. Mixing a monolithic take on hard rock with a slow stoner sound, until now their songs have always described a dark wilderness. However new album, \u2018<em>Highway Crosses<\/em>\u2019, attempts to tame the wilder, more beastly, elements and while many songs retain that former bite, the whole ends up being rather toothless.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, it\u2019s a frustrating record. Early songs \u2018<em>Live Everyday<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Slow Season<\/em>\u2019 cruise along displaying a carefree mix of riffs and viciously growled vocals, enhanced by Nicholas Diltz\u2019s sleepy but catchy choruses. However, the midsection reveals the album\u2019s shortcomings, it\u2019s lacklustre and really isn\u2019t helped by a running order that awkwardly crams the catchier, more fun songs at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"ALL HAIL THE YETI - Highway Crosses [official video]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mceHlh8v4qo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Producer Matt Hyde has given the record a quality aggressive sound, but the longer songs struggle to hold your attention. The spark just isn\u2019t there, making them feel stretched thin. For example, \u2018<em>Seymour Avenue<\/em>\u2019 struggles to find its footing and the chorus to \u2018<em>World is Cold<\/em>\u2019 is so slack, it sounds like the band has fallen asleep while playing it.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous times the sharp bellowing of main vocalist Connor Garritty snaps the band out of their torpor, but it\u2019s a trick he can\u2019t repeat every time. While it\u2019s easy to forgive the blunt lyrics you find elsewhere, \u2018<em>Anti-Social Media<\/em>\u2019 is a lot less clever than it thinks and the results are absolutely cringe-worthy, losing sight of the band\u2019s aesthetic and misunderstands their audience. It\u2019s a shame because the song is built around the kind of guitar lick the album is crying out for.<\/p>\n<p>Put back-to-back with their previous work, you can\u2019t help but be disappointed by \u2018<em>Highway Crosses<\/em>\u2019.
