With a name like \u2018<em>Born A Cynic<\/em>\u2019 you won\u2019t be expecting a happy bouncy pop-punk record but this 11-song set features all the genre\u2019s catchiness buried under a layer of grime. In fact the grinning boy on the cover perfectly captures the band\u2019s devilish cheek.<\/p>\n<p>The album\u2019s sound is fast and anxious, rounded out with a wonderfully snotty, sneery edge. You can definitely hear the influence of 90\u2019s pop-punk bands. When \u2018<em>Medicate<\/em>\u2019 opens you would be forgiven for thinking it was Green Day revisiting their roots. The music video is even a homage to \u2018<em>Basket Case<\/em>\u2019, so they\u2019re aware of what they\u2019re doing. Don\u2019t worry, although they wear their influences on their sleeves, they work hard to make the sound their own.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Weatherstate &quot;Medicate&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3tnc6SyQj1M?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vocalist Harry Hoskins carelessly describes his songs as \u2018jams\u2019 but you can\u2019t deny the craft here. Each has its own quirks and avoids an uninspired three-chord structure. You get filthy guitar squeals on \u2018<em>Rotten Lungs<\/em>\u2019 and the wonderfully scuzzy gallop of \u2018<em>Ghost<\/em>\u2019 shows off their energy. \u2018<em>Brain Dead<\/em>\u2019 is the best example as it is broken up by fantastically noisy section, which really plays on the dirty punk aesthetic. However, on \u2018B<em>arely Human<\/em>\u2019 their intelligence is clear. It feels smart and fun. It\u2019ll be the song to grab your ears with its strong hook, but almost every song here offers a chorus to hum.<\/p>\n<p>At times the album feels a little distant and the song \u2018<em>Cynic<\/em>\u2019 highlights just why. The lyrics lack warmth and it\u2019s a little alienating and a little hard to love. It doesn\u2019t stop the songs being catchy, or well-executed, but it\u2019s almost like Hoskins is trying hide himself rather than opening up. However, if you like your pop-punk with a dose of snotty attitude <em>\u2018Born A Cynic\u2019<\/em> is the record for you.
