Now, debut EP\u00a0<em>&#8216;Piece By Piece&#8217;<\/em> sees <strong>Inklings<\/strong> announcing its arrival proper.<\/p>\n<p>The project is on the surface pop-rock by numbers, keyboards as indispensable as guitars in building a package that recalls Set It Off, Thirty Seconds To Mars and the later work of All Time Low, among others.<\/p>\n<p>FVK&#8217;s rawness and overblown emo is gone, but hereditary influences remain, <em>&#8216;Holding Out&#8217;<\/em> bearing a staggering resemblance to My Chemical Romance&#8217;s <em>&#8216;The Sharpest Lives&#8217;<\/em>. That said, Kemp knows how to take a tune and remould it into his own, and he uses the soaring chorus to reflect on the unhappy end of his former band.<\/p>\n<p>The moment\u00a0<em>&#8216;Piece By Piece&#8217;<\/em> really makes you sit up and take notice\u00a0is\u00a0<em>&#8216;Let Me Know You&#8217;re Alright&#8217;<\/em>. An electrified rocker that would fit in snugly among The Killers&#8217; finest material, it is as unabashedly derivative as the rest of the EP but also certain to elicit an instant, irresistible release.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Inklings - Ambush (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h3g_NvqjjU8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Ambush&#8217;<\/em>, a perspective from within an abusive relationship, does largely more of the same but less convincingly \u2013 even with the verses laced with neat guitar string-bends and a shimmering shift to a middle eight straight out of the 80s.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably most intriguing is closer\u00a0<em>&#8216;Answers&#8217;,\u00a0<\/em>a restrained lament of days gone by that combines piano and distant falsetto with a wonderful motif of circling keyboards and a drum machine. It seems to promise an explosion but becomes a case of less being more, the track impressive for its discipline.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Piece By Piece&#8217;<\/em> might be indebted to a wide spectrum of seminal pop-rock and emo, but Kemp sounds like he is creating something organic and self-driven nonetheless.
