Change was inevitable. Yet, with the vocalist\u2019s spot still vacant, the band regrouped and recorded new music. The result is \u2018<em>The Deathbed Sessions<\/em>\u2019, an EP of punishing metal with a twist. With some of the genre\u2019s big-hitters stepping up to the microphone, it makes for a brutal metal mixtape.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t escape the project\u2019s genesis and hearing seven different perspectives is part of its draw. However, the music is built around the vicious dynamic of the band\u2019s previous release \u2018<em>Cycles Of Eternal Grief<\/em>\u2019. The sound serves them well, providing a rich and potent canvas for their guests to work with. Importantly, the music feels tailored to the vocalist, which enhances the whole experience.<\/p>\n<p>While you could spend hours discussing the relative merits of each vocalist, all you need to know is they all bring their A game. Matt Honeycutt of Kublai Kahn uses a full-force vocal battery on \u2018<em>Fear<\/em>\u2019 but elsewhere you\u2019re treated to excellent use of screams, death growls and even a little clean singing. Lyrically each is also unique. So much so, you\u2019ll spot Venom Prison\u2019s Larissa Stupar from the song title alone.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Cursed Earth - Fear [Official Music Video]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5fnCCAkQd7s?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The band are not content to push themselves and push their guests too. The dark, moody \u2018<em>Deathbed<\/em>\u2019 takes Make Them Suffer&#8217;s Booka Nile and Sean Harmanis into new territory. It really suits their mix of styles and the results are haunting and intense. \u2018<em>Obsession<\/em>\u2019 achieves a similar effect by experimenting further, adding a disturbing industrial flavour to pummel your ears. In fact, intensity is something of a buzzword so although \u2018<em>Burn<\/em>\u2019 trades on fairly uninspired blastbeats, you could still use it to scour the floors of hell.<\/p>\n<p>Always punishing and frequently brilliant, \u2018<em>The Deathbed Sessions<\/em>\u2019 shows off <strong>Cursed Earth<\/strong>&#8216;s ability to write a variety of brutal, atmospheric pieces.
